Removing My Turbo Tail - Help
Hey Guys,
I have a 1986 911 Carrera and at some point in its life it received a Turbo style tail upgrade. I gave it a chance but simply can't stand it any longer, the rear of the car is just not wide enough and it's NOT A TURBO! I plan to remove it this weekend but wanted to get some advice prior to. Anything I need to watch out for or not do? Any tips? I'm sure that the original grate that was under where the Turbo tail is now is long gone so where can i get another original one? Any one happen to have one? And what is the proper name for what I'm looking for, for an 86? Lastly does anyone have a need for the old Turbo Tail? If so send me a message with a fair offer. Thanks, Magooo |

you are going to want to buy a whole new decklid (place a WTB ad in the classifieds)
If you just remove the tail there will be several holes in your deck lid that will need to be filled

Just did this.....the deck lid is identical except for a series of holes drilled to hold the box part of the turbo tail to the lower part of the lid.
I had mine filled and painted....the fit was too perfect. You can sell the rubber tail/box together or separate them...... best o luck, Scott

You could just replace the rubber on the turbo tail with the rubber from a carrera tail. It looks pretty cool and no major replacement of the rear deck.

Thanks for the feedback, I really don't want to get a new deck lid.
Scott, I spent two hours by the car in my parking garage and could not figure out how the tail comes off. I removed the four bolts towards the rear holding the box on but it felt like it was still attached somewhere else. Can you provide some insight on how to do this? Mark, I had no idea you could just get new rubber, how much was yours and where can I get one? |

Mr. MaGoo,
Seems there was a little trick to it, I'll be home tonight and see what I can do for you. The rubber that Mark is referring to is standard Carrera tail rubber and often found used on this forum. I must say that I didn't know that they are interchangeable! Great idea tho I am not a fan of the boxiness of the tail meant to house the intercooler. I will post later - anybody else chime in? Scott

Give it a big hug and rock it side to side. Over the years, the seal tends to adhere to the deck lid making removel difficult.
Better solution: Sell the entire thing and get a new lid. It will be cheaper and more timely in the long run.

The Carrera bolt pattern doesn't just line up (more holes, some in different places). I posted some comparison photos of the two lips one on top of the other a few years ago. The tea-tray lip is thicker than the Carrera one, although the Carrera one does line up pretty well on the top edge. I measure 5mm difference at the back edge, and the profile of the bases at the sides are really quite different. But alwaysflat6s actually did it, as opposed to comparing the lips and going "hmmm" like I did: RUF CTR Tail

Unless it's a turbo deck lid. 930 lids have a large hole where the intercooler lives, and the bottom of the tail base comes right up to the edge of this hole....

Nobody here is trying to trick you. The time- and cost-effective path is to buy a replacement decklid from a salvage yard or ebay. The paint is not going to match where the old tail has been protecting the old decklid from the sun, there will be holes and often other damage when you finally get it all off -- and the decklid/tail assembly is something you can sell for enough money to pay for both a replacement decklid and the paint job to make it match the car.

Quick update...
I've removed the four bolts towards the rear of the deck lid holding on the turbo "Tea Table" tail and cannot remove the part. There's a radiator blocking the opening so I can't see up there and I can't remove the radiator because the bolts just spin and don't come out. Where else is the turbo tail attached and how the hell does it come off? What's the secret? |

You are wasting your time and for some reason won't listen to those that have given sage advice. The tail will have holes in it and further damage from the spoiler which will result in a necessary repaint. The grill alone will cost you over 100 bucks.
Put the bolts back in and take it to someone that knows what they are doing. Look for a used deck lid that is the same color as your car and just swap lids. Or...just leave it alone. BTW, the "radiator" is a condenser for the air conditioner.
