Well there's your problem! (no compression)
So my cheap '74 is starting to prove it's "un-cheapness". After not running for 8+ years I got the motor to fire and run; albeit poorly. There was a loud 'pft' sound that after finding loose head stud nuts I figured was a sure sign of pulled studs and loose cylinders. Well after fighting with all sorts of fun I got both heads off. Number 2 was the main culprit and had 0 compression. Well low and behold it was the one with a completely pulled head stud. Number 1 was missing about 2" of the sealing ring and had some wear, however #2 was missing half the sealing ring and had about a .75" chunk of material missing. Not generally good for compression.
![]() Now I need to replace that one cylinder for sure. But can I just replace the one? Or is my only option the full set of six for 3K? Being my first 911 motor rebuild I am not quite sure if you can source the correct tolerance group parts and use them or if everything has to be a matched set from the factory. They might even be repairable by a machinist too, but this is why I am coming to the best pool of knowledge around! I am looking to weigh my options because this is going to end up as a 12K rebuild then i might look for another motor or it will have to sit while I accumulate the funds. -Greg

Take the heads and cylinders into a competent machine shop.
Start from there. The bottom end maybe saveable. Pulled studs can be fixed with inserts. Take your time. Add up the costs. You may be better off buying a running motor.

Look for threads on the cost of splitting your case and having it properly repaired with time certs vs replacing it with a good 3.0 or larger engine. I think you'll find your answer.

OK, I was going down this road in order to get case-savers installed. So I will start making some calls to see what can be done for welding/machining to save the parts. I will also look at used motors.
I like the idea of sticking with a 2.7 but I realize that cost wise it might not be the most economical.

Sorry for your dilemma.
For grins and wiggles, could you stick a magnet to the cylinder bore to see if it is Nikasil? Along with posting the last four numbers in your VIN? Thanks.
