Just looking to get an idea re: how many of you are PCA members. Do you recommend membership? Why or why not? This seems like a good way to start tracking my '83 SC...

I suggest trying it out for a year. It really depends on your local chapter...

I'd also agree, try it and see. Some Regions are very active with many track events, others not so much.
where are you located? |

I like it for 2 basic reasons - the monthly periodical Panorama, and the many events you can attend (including track events) to meet and make friends with other guys/gals who share your Porsche passion.

I'm a big fan of PCA, and been a member for almost 25 years.
Great guys and great events...but my chapter is an active chapter...can't speak to to other regions. I don't know why you wouldn't join. Nick |

I joined for the events.
What I really like is that there are different types of events for people with different interests. You can do wine and cheezes, but if you don;t like that you can do DE track events, but if you don't like that you can do coffee runs, but if you don't like that...something for everyone.

Try it you'll like it.
As a long time member I have meet hundreds of new friends. I am about to go to a casual car show today. We will have 20 to 25 cars and eat lunch at a local Hooters. The new and improved Panorama is amazing. The club magazine now is as good or better than Excellence. The club is 100% what YOU make of it. If you just sit back and complain it will be a bad experience. If you like to wade in and join in the fun you will be part of the club and loving it in no time. We have an active region and in the summer sometimes there is an even at least once a week.

Most regions have something for everyone. Southern Arizona Region does track events, car shows, tours, ralleys as well as charitable events and highway cleanups. Check out the website for your local chapter. You can find it from the main PCA website.

I joined and my car isn't even on the road right now.
A recent tech event they hosted at a local specialist was worth the yearly dues alone. |

Join, get involved, try a DE or AX event! If not into driving at speed there are tons of other events to go to, all depending on where you are and how your local region is. If in an area with multiple regions around you, join the one that's most active in your type of events, you don't have to be a member of the closest one..

I cannot even remember how long I have been a member!
The monthly magazine Panorama has a new and improved format and has good contact info for tech support and regional reps. I have the PCA enameled badge on my deck lid on my 1973.5T which adds a nice touch to the car. As an added benefit Porsche dealerships give a 10-15% on OEM parts to PCA members, so for comparative shopping they can be a great deal. Between the concours school, tech sessions, rallying, DE schools and social events membership is worth the annual fee. If you have a child who you managed to brainwash in believing that Porsche is the greatest car in the world and that dad is even cooler for owning and driving one, the PCA will provide two membership cards, one for the owner and one for a designated family member. My son growing up loved having his name on the card in his wallet. Bob 73.5T |

Go for it, Brother, learn how to drive your baby correctly. But be warned you may be hooked on A/X & D.E.'s.
Then go to an sponsored TRACK event like ACRA ( American Car Racing Association ), our mod, Jack Olsen is the Instructor there. Enjoy you fanatic, to be ![]() Jim

PCA member for 8 yrs and very satisfied with the club. Regions vary in terms of interests and activity levels so visit some events and find a good fit for you. In SoCal there are about 10 very different choices ranging from small clubs of 200 to the granddaddy SDR at 5000 members.

I am the counterpoint.
I was a member with my first 911. Yeah, the magazine is OK. At the same time, I wasn't getting much use out of it. I'm not a "show and shine" guy, and that's what it seems like the group down here likes to do. In the end, I was paying my membership dues for a magazine. That I only sometimes read. And then recycled. So, I dropped my membership. Honestly, I don't miss it.

You need to be a PCA member to register for the DE/track events and the new format Panorama magazine is nice to read every month. You also get a 10% PCA discount on parts at Porsche dealers so depending on what you need there it will probably cover the membership cost anyways ...

It's just like many have said, you get out of it what you put into it.
I got hooked on DE, then discovered the love/hate relationship I have with my car in getting it ready for the track events. Then I became a tech inspector, little did I know that all that was preparing me for the rebuild of my car I'm currently in the middle of.

Thankyou all for your feedback. I think I'll go ahead and join PCA, after all, I've got nothing to lose but $46! Besides, when I was a BMW CCA member, I used to take my 325is and M3 to DE events... maybe a total of 10 over the years.
I have yet to get in over my head in my '83sc, and if it does ever happen, much better to be in a controlled environment of a racetrack. I realize that we all KNOW not to let off of the throttle when overcooking a curve, but having the balls to stay in it during the moment must be learned!! BTW, I live in central MO, and I'm looking to attend a DE event at Gateway International. |

Agreed. Been a member for eight or nine years. The magazine is okay but I stay because of the people in my chapter.

You can also check out the websites of the regions close to you. They usually have a calendar of activities. See if you like any of them, and whether the dates suit you. Like if they're always Saturday and you just can't adjust, you won't be able to attend. Or the location is always a 2 hour drive away from you...
