Cigarette lighter hot wire problems

Bought this 87 Carerra and sorting out a pile of shorts and bad grounds.
My lighter was removed and in the glovebox. As it turns out the hot lead that plugs in the back of the lighter housing was welded to the metal holder in the dash! Ok thats why the fresh air blower circut blows fuses! I thought that it was the fan and well it may be shorted as well because it wont power up at the connector on the fan housing.

So the problem! I cannot pull that lead out far enough to plug in the lighter. I used a hemastat to pull in it but only get about a 2-3cm into the housing, not enough to plug it back in!

I cant get to it throught the radio slot. I didnt want to pull the fanhousing apart, is there a way to get through by removing the glove box pocket? Is the glove box hard to remove? I want to use the easy wasy if possible. Adding a dash light fuse today among many other wiring, light bulbs and headlight issues.

Also why would my dome not work with the door function? Its a 2 way right? works on manual function only.

Thanks for helping this Jr Pelican, while new to Pcars Im an old hand with VW air cooled, Rusty Old Land Cruisers, British and European bikes and all kinds of other stuff. Electrical is no bigger for me. Im just learning the ropes on teardow n and trouble shooting these little gems. This was my dream car as a kid in the 80's... long time coming, the hook has been set!

I have never pulled the glove box on our 911's.

However it does not seem complicated.

You may want to remove the glove box door first for easy access to the box.

Here's a pic from the PET.

Good luck,

Gerry

Glove box removal won't help you get to the lighter socket.
Look underneath and you will see the sheet metal curves up and around the glove box opening. I could only reach the lighter socket from behind by going in through the trunk, removing the cardboard cover and pulling the center air duct.
I replaced my wire to it with a constant fused hot.
I'm 6'2" with long arms and was barely able to reach the darn thing.....

Disconnect the battery ground cable before you begin.

Consider splicing a 6" or length of wire to the factory source wire so you can connect/disconnect the lighter socket via the usual access from the cabin.

No matter what you be futzing with....dive bombing the electrics is always a good idea to yank the battery. A spark always leads to an "ah crap moment".....trust me.....bleeding follows.....

+1 when ever doing any electrical work, I have a burnt finger to prove it, thank goodness it did not hurt my baby :-o

Unfortunately, been there done that. You need to go thru the truck and remove the entire fresh air system to get the lighter wire and jam nut.

Sorry to write,

Jim

Rotflmao! Truer words have never been spoken, on British cars and Bic lighters!

Are you here all week?

I need to sort that socket out and wire in ampower plug for my Electrical gimzo crap. The oem one is not gizmo friendly with its clip design bottom.
