It was mentioned to use 800 grit sand paper to prep area to be painted. My wheels are fully polished. Will I need to prep with sanding also or is that only if the area to be painted already has old paint? If so, I'm assuming the sanding is done after masking so as not to blemish the unpainted areas. Should the painted area be clear coated after paint has dried and cured? I know, too many questions but if I'm gonna do it I don't wanna f*** something up.

rbogh901 - I settled on Rustoleum Satin Black #7777 and Metallic Matte Nickel #7277.

Yes -- you'll want to sand any bare metal polished surface before painting. A light treatment with 800 grit should be fine. Paint adherence to polished metal is usually not too good. The sanding provides texture for adherence. Sand carefully after masking. You don't want to disturb the tape seal and compromise the sharpness of the masked line.

You should also wipe it down with a prep solvent or lacquer thinner to remove wax, oil, fingerprints etc. Again, a light wipe down with a lint free cloth dampened with the solvent should be fine. Don't get it too wet or you will compromise the tape seal.

If you look at the second to last picture in post 31 above, that surface has been sanded as described after masking. You just want a fine brushed metal finish.

I've almost lost my paranoia about taking this project on.
Thanks Joe

Do you think masking off the tires is ok? I don't want to remove and re-install the tires.

Masking the tires should be fine.
Another thought - since these wheels have been in use, I would clean the back sides as best you can, and mask the openings from the back. That will keep debris from the back from blowing onto your fresh paint.

You can stick playing cards or index cards into the tight space between the bead of the tire and the rim all the way around, then tape outside of that. It leaves a much more defined space for the paint on the outer edge of the rim and really keeps all the spray off your tires, even right next to the rim surface. - Matt

Great recommendation.

Thanks.

I'm only painting/replacing the paint between the pedals. I may be misunderstanding but if the outer rim will be masked off with paper all the way over the tires wouldn't that be sufficient?

Definitely sufficient. Many people are painting the silver portions into their RSR look wheels these days, in which case you would paint to the edge of the tire bead. - Matt

I'm thinking of doing the RSR treatment on my 7 & 9 Fuchs. Would anyone be able to either show me what it would look like on a GP white car or perhaps photoshop a pic of mine.

Thanks

I got some fine line tape from a local automotive paint supplier. He says to prep with a 400 grit and use a primer. It was recommened on here to use 800 grit.
I realize I've been asking a lot of questions but a couple more.
800 or 400 grit.
Primer?
What color, type and brand is the best to return painted area to original?
I do not have existing black areas since my wheels are fully polished. Does anyone have a photo for reference to locate where the masking should be lacated?
They are 6x15. not deep.

Nicely done, the wheels look good.

Satin black. Wurth makes a good one, but it's tough to find and usually needs to be ordered. I've heard lots of guys happy with Rust-oleum satin black, too, but I've never tried it on Fuchs.

Thanks, you have been a lot of help. If I screw them up it'll be your fault

Have you been talking to my wife? That statement sounds very familiar...

Got started this evening masking my wheels. About two hours per wheel but I took my time to make sure all the petals where masked off the same length and width. I put two quarters in two of the lug holes on the bottom tire. When I paint I'll put a quarter in all five holes.
