3.2 Carrera throttle could get` stuck open
While changing the accel cable rubber coupler I discovered the link from the engine would not reach the little ball socket. Hummmm , turns out the throttle stops at the butterfly was fouling with the hose clamp screw at the air intake rubber elbow. I was only getting about 2/3 max opening and if I would have stepped harder on the gas pedal it's possible the accel linjkage could get caught behind the stupid hose clamp with a possible blown engine or worse as a consequence.
Moral is, if the clamp is straight back, so its easily accessible with a screw driver then it can interfere with the accelerator so clearance should be verified. First pic, the accel coupling. Second pic the accel linkage hits hose clamp screw. SHEESH ![]() ![]()

I've seen that too. I rotated the hose clamp out of the way on mine.

I had that too but on a cheap worm gear clamp, not OEM.
2nd situation is the bellcrank behind gas pedal. Bushings worn out and bellcrank swayed to side catching under sheetmetal on floorboard. 1st time happened, was doing 118MPH on a track. Let off gas and was still pulling strong! Hit the key off.... |

The hose clamp holding the throttle open situation happened to me right after I purchased my Targa. I was jumping on it over a hill near my house one evening. When I went over the top and let off, the car just kept accelerating. I had my hand on the key to shut her down but when I depressed the pedal a second time the linkage freed up and she slowed down. I drove the rest of the mile home and was able to determine that this is what happened. I turned the hose clamp and have not had any issues since. I am just glad that I was not decelerating for a corner. Checking the clearance of that hose clamp is a very good idea.

Thanks for the posts. I had my accelerator stick on my 87 Carrera. I pushed in the clutch and had to quickly let it out! Shut off the key and pulled over to park. Now I know where to look.

Same exact thing happened to me a few years ago, after my engine rebuild. Throttle stuck wide open. Good thing I was on a side street, shut it down, and figured it out quickly. This should be on everyone's "double check" list...

Does anyone have a picture of what it looks like incorrect... and what it looks like when it is corrected?? I'd like to compare with my linkage

WOW, never knew about this...and to Boyt911SC, the coupler in the pic is not in the larger pic. I believe its there to show what he was replacing when he discovered the problem in the first place. The hose clamp screw (lower left center of big pic with a bit of red on it) that snugs up the hose clamp can apparently get hung up on the throttle mechanism at theta of the engine. OP can correct me if I'm not describing the issue accurately.

I also had mine stick wide open, but it was on the peddle side of things. Right at the transition where the rod attaches from the bell crank and travels through the tunnel towards the rear of the car, it got caught up on the edge of the tunnel sheet metal. scared the hell out of me ( I was in full boost, and just shifted from 3rd into 4th!!!!)

I was coming up on an intersection with traffic ( this was a highway that was ending and turning into a regular road). at around 130 to 140 MPH, I could not get it unstuck.... shut the ignition off and was hard on the binders!!!! Pulled into a parking lot, and took about 5 minutes to pick the seat cushion out of my ass!!!!!) I was worried that I hurt the turbo due to full boost, and no oil supply upon shutdown. All was ok. found the reason for the stuck open throttle, and drove away, after fixing it. I have a good friend who was in the passenger seat who remembers this like it was yesterday (it was almost 20 years ago).... fun times..LMAO!!!

I couldn’t figure from the picture about the throttle getting stuck on a 3.2 so I stuck my iPhone in the back and just started taking pictures. I get it now and you can see that my clamp (red circle) is far away from the throttle linkage. If the clamp was located in the green circle I could see how that could cause a problem. Great catch Ganun! As well I got a glimpse of the triangle of death and it is clean and dry.

Hi ..i want to add to Tony picture of the cruise control bracket and those two bolts.
Make sure you put in the washers .I have seen if you do not put them back your linkage will get stuck-the bolts will be too long ....Even with the hose clamp a side.... ivan |
