Installing Pertronix Points - Change Coil Too?

A friend recommended I replace my old conventional points with Pertronix. If/When I do this, should I change the coil too? If so, what coil(s) should I consider?

(I need $18 more to qualify for free shipping

I would. Ignitor coil. I believe it is a petronics product also.

Suggest distributor rotor & cap (wear items). Or, magnecore wires. I used original coil 20+ years after installing a pertronics ignitor for my 2.7L.

Whether or not you should change your coil has nothing to do with the decision to use Pertronix or normal points. Pertronix still performs the same function as a switch (but not requiring typical points maintenance). It does not affect how your coil works.

If you upgrade your computer keyboard should you also replace the cpu?

On my 74 911, I put a pertronix in with my original coil back 8 years ago and it has worked fine.

Ditto. The coil's function does not rely on points or Pertronix. I have Pertronix with original coil - works fine.

The only upgrade which would require a coil upgrade would be an ignition amplifier such as a an allison or XR 3000 because the primary voltage is stepped up and the coil saturation is increased. As said a good inspection of the secondary ignition parts is in order.

So far my list is:

Pertronix points
Rotor
Cap
Plugs

maybe coil----

should I do wires? Any favorites? This isn't a race car... I don't mind power and performance, but smooth running is my top goal. I'd like to order everything from Pelican.....

I think it depends on the condition of the car and how new it is to you. With me, I bought a good condition '74 but I ultimately replaced everything on your list + wires and fuel & vacuum lines. I did this just so that I knew for myself when everything was last changed.

My car came with a petronixs but still had the original coil. It has worked fine for many years.

If you want to replace the coil, The Accel Super stock coil is friendly with all electronic systems and not hard on the pocketbook.

I've got the pertronix points with the pertronix flame thrower 2 coil. I put it in about 3 years ago and seems to work nicely.
