MSD cd unit question

I've posted a picture of a msd cd unit that I purchased used for my 77 911.

Can this cd unit be bench tested before it is installed and wired in?

Don't see a model name or model number other than MSD anywhere on the outside. There is a part number 6446 on the front, other wise nothing else other than the company name and contact info. This may be an older unit.

Can it be tested with a multi-meter before installing it? The guy I purchased from said it was working when removed. Just want to make sure. Thanx to all who have offered insight and advice in the past. L

I think the only way to test is to check that it is sending spark. The only way to do this is to simulate the coil and other wires. The best way to check is to use your car or just extend the wires needed for the connection.

Also some shops that sell msd have a display set up that you can use to check the box.

Here are some links I found, it seems the box you have is a 6T.

The 6446 is a MSD 6 series configured for an external rev limit control. I've provided a link to the MSD 6 series install manual, that includes some testing troubleshooting tips...I believe.

regards,
Al

If you do decide to bench test it...make sure you have a really good ground to all points in the harness!!
You don't want a 30,000 volt spark jumping around on the bench!

MSD 6 AL, You may need a Tach Adapt to get correctly modulated tachometer reference signal. My Tach was jumping all over the place with an after-market ignition amplifier.

You can bench test it by hooking it up to a battery and a coil. Run the coil secondary wire close to a ground from the battery and look for a spark when you trigger the unit by grounding the white wire or by touching the green and violet wires together.
