85 3.2 weird idle issue

85 carrera coupe runs/drives well. Pretty much all new ICV/Wong chip, recent new AAV. Issue is an occasional high idle when stopped. Car will hunt from 1000-1100 rpm. Seems to be somewhat random and worse when cold out. Starts up fine and 'settles' nicely but probably 50% of the time won't settle to 800 rpm at idle and instead does the possesed hunting thing. Any idea's? searched the forum and didn't see anything quite the same. Possible funky idle microswitch? although the switch is new. More annoying than anything else but would love to get it solved

Symptoms sound like what my 87 did when the mirco switch died, you mentioned that you replaced it, did you confirm that it is switching when the throttle is closed?

Base idle needs to be lowered. I would just do it and move on.

I'd check for a vacuum leak, this could let extra air in and play havoc with the idle.

I would go with Chuck here on this one, if you have a new ICV. Check and tighten the manifold bolts, 8mm hex, I think. Some bolts are difficult to reach. The gaskets are prone to shrinkage. Also, the brake booster vacuum line back by the cruise is prone to cracking.

X2 all above - if you search these forums you will discover this is a common problem - you'll have to search a lot of 3.2 subjects to find 'em all

there may be no solution - search for it diligently

had something similar but a much more dramatic fluctuation in idle speed. very intermittent with no rhyme nor reason.

clamp the hose to the idle control valve / aux air valve. if hunting stops, you've found your problem.

I'm having a similar problem jdannies. Once warm, the idle bounces between 800 and 1100 about every second or so with a constant rhythm. I've changed the ICV and the air filter with no change. Just ordered a microswitch. Post back here if you solve it!

You can always throw money and parts at the problem first without fixing it or do what doesn't cost anything last which usually turns out to be an adjustment issue for this situation.

I can always make my 3.2 Carrera do the fast idle up and down thing just by raising the idle on the idle speed bypass. You don't need to try that since it's already doing that.

Cheers,
