How to remove rear view mirror mount button?

I am a very tall driver and the stock single joint adjustment mirror sits too low. I want to replace it with a double jointed mirror that can be positioned higher in my line of sight.

Question is, does anyone have suggestions for removing the stock mounting button without cracking the windshield? Thanks.

it's always a bit chancy, but glass shops use heat, just enough to soften the cement, like from a tiny butane torch. we're talking the small, round metal tab, not the big black square thing. i've used a piece of metal with a hole cut just the right size so it slips over the tab, to keep the heat off the glass, then a slight twist with pliers gets it off when it's ready. the original cement is clear. JB weld or some other stuff may not respond to heat as well.

When I replaced my windshield I attempted to remove that button. It was stuck fast and not meant to be removed. Maybe someone on the board will know of a trick.

After you move the mirror up higher, how do you get rid of the old cement stuck on the window from the previous mirror position?

This too is near and dear to my heart. PO installed it sidways...makes it nearly impossable to look straight back. Would love to remove and straighten.

Funny.........I used to knock mine off accidently about once a year. I was buying those trapaziod double sided patches two at a time. Glue comes off with acetone or MEK. I'd say clean glass w/ alcohol before sticking mirror on, but I must have not been very good at it as it never lasted.

How about more actual hints,..and less of the "me too" .

I also would like a good answer on this. The stock mirror sucks, and is too "light" of mass and vibrates badly. A GM or Japanese mirror,...double jointed..would be just the ticket.

Maybe we just buy another mirror...WITH the new button...and simply glue the button over the old button ?????

I just shoved a putty knife between the windshield and mirror base. The mirror just dropped off.

Vib-freq. = (k/m)^½ --> where m-> mass & k->stiffness
so perhaps it's just too loose.
(read: mine doesnt vibrate, and I'll guess it weighs the same)

My mirror is squarely blocked by the center mount brake light. I was looking for alternative mirrors (double jointed seems like it would work) and locations (thought about going to the right side, but realized passenger's head would block. I also thought about going lower, does anyone know of a problem that might result from that?

BTW...my mirror is on "tight"...but maybe the dual exhaust is helping the thing viubrate. FWIW...my friend's 911 suffers similary, and as you move the mirror around it's (single) pivot, it's clear that other mirrors have more heft...more damping mass...couldn't hurt.

Yes, that's my final answer Regis. But I accept no liability if you shove it the wrong way.

And I also replaced my rear view mirro with a local auto store cheepie. Looks better, saved a few grams of weight, doesn't vibrate like my OEM did, and looks OEM.
