engine electronics -- 2.2 into a '66 -- options?
A cross post from early911. Anyone done this before? Solutions?
I'm in the process of putting a 1970 2.2 in a '66 conversion (conversion done long ago, not by me). My first go at this. Question is this -- the 1970 engine I have has a different engine wiring harness, I think, than the engine that came out (I do not have that engine). In reading the forum, it looks like my car is set up for non-cdi system, while the engine I bought was set up to use a cdi. I have the box and harness that came with the engine (see pics below). Would appreciate any thoughts/advice on my options here. Do I need to use the box that came with the 2.2, or can I modify somehow to make it work with the existing system in the car? Or is there a third, or fourth, option I should consider. Originality, obviously, is not an issue. Engine is not high performance, just a 1970 T. Just looking to make it a nice driver. Would prefer to not spend a fortune, but want to to do it right. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The 2.2 will be happier with the CD ignition. It should not be very involved to install the 70 panel. Do you have MFI or carbs on the 2.2?

Then you have no other "electronics" to worry about. Go for it with the Bosch Ignition, you'll be glad you did.

So, it's a 66 chassis? Use the '70 panel with the CDI for sure. Your tach won't work, probably. Porsche used two or three different tachs with the 3 pin CDIs, which are different than the ones used with the points ignition. Looks like you have the tach sensor on your '70 board. Meaning you have to use a '70 or early '71 tach or you may be able to get by with an adapter.
Some of the items on the '70 panel you won't need. You will definitely need to do some re-wiring. You need to get the wiring diagrams for both the motor and the chassis, and a manual would help as well. My car has a T motor in an E chassis. I ended up making my own motor's wiring harness from scratch.

Yes, it's a '66 chassis. Unfortunate about the tach. Any thoughts on the best sources for wiring diagrams?

These schematics will help get you started: PorscheWiringDiagrams
I'm in the same boat with a 2.2E going back in a '65...I can feel your pain...;-) |

From the link I posted above. Adding the BHKZ (aka CDI) to your '66 wiring. (compliments of John 304065)
I did the same on my '66, only used an MSD unit for ignition and put everything on the rear firewall in the engine bay so it's out of sight. For the tach you can add an adapter (msd makes them) or have your tach rebuilt to accept the signal from the CDI. North Hollywood Speedometers did mine. ![]() ![]()

Thanks, Tijnes. Do you have a close up photo of your panel? Among the 14 connections to the engine harness, it looks like you used six or seven? Very clean. Do you see a benefit (or lack of benefit) to going with the MSD over the stock unit in my case? I think it might be smart to start with new stuff, just to guarantee that everything works before I start with the wiring.

If your Bosch CDI works I would use it. Here's a schematic of my setup. On the bottom it has the pin configuration. The engine harness only needs 7 pins. To make the engine harness is not difficult other than sourcing the proper colored wire in small enough quantities. It's worth using the correct wire colors IMO because a year from now when you need to make changes you'll have forgotten I'm finishing up the rear wiring on my '78 now and I've cursed the hack mechanic that worked on that car every day since I started.
