Any reason not to use Haggerty?

I thought I had asked this before and found it would not work for my car, but realized I was trying to figure out if I should register my 87 Coupe as a historic vehicle or with normal CT tags. I got the normal tags, but a fellow pelican asked me today why I'm not with Haggerty. I don't drive the car to work (walk) and its garaged. Its my only car, wife has her own. I put all this into Haggerty's site and got an identical quote to what Progressive is charging me - but with lots of bonuses included (flat bedding, free roadside gas/battery service, parts coverage etc) plus they seem like genuine car people. Any downsides I'm not thinking of? I drive about 8k/year and said as much on their quote form.

YMMV but Hagerty denied coverage on my 88 because I do 6k miles a year including occasional commute.

Hagerty is not a bad choice at all. Since the rate would be the same as you described with Progressive, maybe you could angle a better rated with multi car policy? For me, Erie was considerably more expensive even with four vehicles. The one thing I wish about Hagerty is I wish they had a DE program. The only thing they offer is coverage for cars in the paddock & while on track for a couple of "parade laps".

I have Hagerty for both Porsches. The coverage and the price is right for me. Neither car is a daily driver and both are garaged. I can live within their limitations. I have no claims with them thankfully. So I am satisfied with Hagerty. I will say that I have read some VERY bad things about Progressive.

My policy with Haggerty includes an agreed value if totalled. Progressive didnt offer this even though I have another vehicle insured with them. I have been very happy with the service at Haggerty. However I have never had a claim with them. But to be fair with Progressive I had some storm damage to my RV and they really stepped up to the plate for me.

What are their limitations? I don't ever commute, but I do want to allow myself up to 8k miles as I'd hate to not take the 911 on account of something so silly as insurance.

Are you sure about the premium being the same? Remember, Haggerty quotes are for a one year policy whereas Progressive writes 6 month policies. The Haggerty premium for my 88 911 cab was less than 1/2 what I would have paid with Allsnake.

I've had a claim with Hagerty and they just cut the check with no issues.
I also called before I drove my SC to Meridian, Miss for my engine swap (round trip about 4k miles)....they said no problem.

Hi every one...been awhile since I posted, but I read threads daily. I have agreed on value with Hagerty. This is an absolute must or you will receive unknown value depending on who hits you. I was getting ready to put my 911 sc in shop for broken head stud tear done and took it out for one last drive. My headlights were terribly original and did not see the deer in the roadway until it was too late. Actually just did a light tap, dented the front left fender and headlight ring. Hagerty was great to work with. I now have engine rebuilt, body damage repair is next. Hagerty gets my thumbs up ! Joe

I have both cars(1972, 1987) with Grundy. I'm paying $400 a year for both cars, agreed value, no mileage limitations, $100k/300k liability. They were easy to work with. So far, so good.

The amount of mileage driven isn't as important as that Hagerty requires that you have a 2nd "main" form of transportation and your wife's car would not count, she has to have her own car. I have a motorcycle as my main form of transportation that I commute on, they were fine with that.

I think the biggest factor in your yearly cost with Hagerty is the insured value for a total loss, then your deductibles. My 86 911 is insured for $25k with $0 deductibles, flatbed towing included, 5k miles per year, and it's like $600/yr.

A few other classic car insurers may be cheaper but my uncle has owned his own Allstate business his entire life yet uses Hagerty for his 69 corvette and recommended them as the best in his opinion, so I signed up with Hagerty and although in nearly 2 years I've only called them once for a tow, I have no complaints.

I just changed to Hagerty from American collectors. Hagerty is the only classic car insurer that will cover your 21 or older children driving your car and they also cover your under 21 yr olds driving if you are with them. All the others needed 10 yrs driver experience. This was the only reason I changed. Hagerty is covering both the cars for an agreed value and 5k miles on each car for the year.

I'm with Hagerty, and have been for almost 20 years now. No claims, so no problems.

I do always go out and check rates and policy restrictions.

One of the big things I found in terms of restrictions is an "in sight" clause. Basically this means you have to keep your car in sight at all times when out on a drive. No problem if you're driving, but if you stop to buy some snacks or get lunch/dinner and your car is not in your "sight" at all times, it ain't covered. I found this within the "fine print" of several of the other major collector policy insurers.

Was with Hagerty, then their premiums went up. I suppose they have a fairly large advertising/marketing budget (Speed Channel, Barrett-Jackson, etc.).

Pretty sure most classic car insurance is relatively low risk and a cash-cow for the companies in that area. I'm with Grundy now.

Suggest comparing rates before renewing each year.

Being in the business, and a Haggerty agent. I can say that they are a decent outfit, pay claims fairly and timely. Their pricing tends to be higher than the competition and a lot of competition has come into the marketplace in the last few years which has chipped away at them. American Modern Home Ins Co is a carrier I use quite a bit now, good on claims, reasonably priced, will handle a wide variety of vehicles (old and new).

I had Haggerty for one year on my SC and GT3. Got a letter reminding me of all the restrictions before renewing. Read the fine print.....you cannot drive for normal errands, etc. I called them to confirm the restrictions and they confirmed, somewhat bluntly. They basically said I should cancel if I am concerned about their restrictions. I cancelled and went to another insurance company. I have 7 cars, but like to drive when I want where I want. Probably no problem with a claim, but I do not like having the possibility for them to enforce their restrictions hanging over my head. You can listen to client experiences, but read the fine print...that is the fact.
