Replacement battery

Looking for info on a new battery for my 76 Targa. Optima red top seems to popular but I realize it wont use factory mounts. Any incite is appreciated.

Optimas are good because they don't leak. But, the don't have the highest rating and they are pricey. Buy a group 49 (I think it is) get 850 amps and bolts right up. Exide has a good rating. A lot of places don't carry the groups that fit the 911. The poles are reversed, so a generic won't work unless you want to do cable work.

If you charging system is in good working order, your battery won't leak and mess up your sheet metal. You should treat all that anyway.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

I put an Odyssey 925 in my 76 Targa, (), using the Rennline kit. It's a quick way to loose 21lbs, and get a battery that won't leak, and can tolerate non-use much better than a standard LA battery.

All that being said, I've had good luck with an Optima red-top in my rock crawler.

Odyssey for 6 years... I was so impressed I bought another for my VW Golf (3 years).

I also have a kill switch at the battery. Unless you drive your car everyday this would be a good idea for any car that sits for any length of time.

Mine is a "PC925"....

I just did this - went with a group 48 battery (eveready)from Sams club for $59 Fit just like the old one - the old one an exide lasted almost 8 years.

I couldn't justify the cost of an optima - although I have two blue tops in the boat.

Batteries

I just put new batteries into my 72 911T, I found Interstate U911, they fit perfect into the boxes and if I would have the original hardware for securing them, they would work perfect.

Posts are covered, so there is no problem with shorting out. I hope so.

Fritz,

You wrote this post about 5 years ago, but I see you had a similar challenge that I have in 2013. How did you solve the securing issue without the original hardware? PM me if you get this message.

Thanks,

Tom

Don't know if you got your answer, but this may help:

another option is to install a smaller (but still compatible) group 48 battery -- at least on carreras, there's apparently a second mounting hole that will secure them and they have the same polarity/post positions as those for the monster oem battery. If you look for an AGM style battery, i believe it will provide similar benefits to the optima as the acid is in a gel state and won't spill/boil out. Search the forums for more info

Just replaced mine on an 84 Carrera using a group 49 Bosch maintenance free battery which fits perfectly with the stock screws and retainers. If you are looking to spend less ($108 installed)! It does weigh 44 lbs though. I think the Optima red top is 31 lbs.

Carquest and NAPA can get the East Penn-Deka 48AGM70 (group 48 AGM..fits fine in the battery location with one of the optional fitting points) for about $158.

I used the Deka to replace my nine year old full sized OEM Porsche truck battery that was in there..man that thing weighed a ton. The Deka was much easier to move around.

If your battery ground strap is old enough to vote (or better than 10 years old)..get one from our host and install it with the new battery. It makes a difference.

I did something very similar this past spring. I used a group 34 AGM in place of the 49. The only dimension that was different is the length. And of course weight. It was a bit more than 15 pounds lighter. The factory brackets fit, the cables didn't need to be modified and the bolt-down hole was right there and worked seamlessly.

Here is what I did. Check flea bay for the mounting plate shown that fits optima batteries.
