Anyone else have this setup?
Interesting way to mount the oil cooler.

That looks like a sure fire way to raise your intake temps. I'd never put an oil cooler in the engine compartment.... neither would Porsche, as the cooler on the engine is below the sheet metal. It doesn't appear to be an optimal setup.

That is where Porsche designed and installed my A/C condensor on my 1980 sc.

I agree with what's been posted, although there is a chance that that's a transaxle cooler, which sheds less heat than the engine. and is often configured that way.
No, looking at the rest of the ad, it appears that the poor guy is an idiot. No indication of an oil cooler up front, and those lines look like they're AN-12, which suggests that the guy thought he'd come up with a brilliant way to cool the engine oil (and, of course, heat up the engine) while simultaneously making the weight distribution of his race car... even worse. ![]()

Thinking out loud mode on:
As low as that sits, I wonder how much of a problem that really is. It looks like with the lid closed, the cooler would be down between the intake stacks. I don't know anything about fluid dynamics, and it looks like it would certainly raise the ambient underhood temp, but the path from the grille to the carbs is fairly short, and the cooler is not in the path. (assuming he races without air cleaners, with watersheds on there, all bets are off) On the other hand, sitting that low, it probably wouldn't get much airflow (unless there is a fan on top of it) and probably wouldn't be all that effective. And then there is the weight distribution issue. Not saying it is a good idea, I guess I am saying it may suck, but it could certainly suck more. Tom |

I think the orange car is Dave Griswold's, a guy who used to post here pretty regularly (haven't seen him in a while, unfortunately). I don't think it's a great position for the tranny cooler, although with the megaphones, there's no muffler heat in that space.
Still, from a weight-distribution point of view and an air-flow point of view, it's not ideal. Other than that, Griswold did some amazing work on his cars -- beautiful, clean-as-guest-china stuff -- and he was building a C4 Turbo project from sratch, last I remember. A smart and meticulous guy.

By the looks of where that cooler is when the lid is down, it'll do a great job of pumping hot air right into the fan intake. Not the ticket for helping the fan supply cool air through the cylinder and piston fins.
