How do G50/01's normally shift when rebuilt?
Just curious.
I don't ever have grinding, but 2nd has always been hard to engage. 1st is fairly hard too, and I've never found that right speed before stopping where it engages with little pressure that I've found on other trans. 3/4 seem to be fairly effortless but too feel notchy when cold. Of course 2nd wears faster than 3rd-5th, obviously. Running Mobil 1 right now. Just want to reiterate, it never grinds unless I accidentally do not have the clutch fully disengaged. I've started to believe this was normal, but never driven a rebuilt G50 to compare. Have driven a 965 G50, and it felt noticeably smoother. Do rebuilt G50's shift smooth like modern manuals, or is it inherent in design to be a little tougher to shift? Funny thing is, if I shift it really fast, say during drag racing, it seems effortless..... |

I've had cars with 901s, 915s, and G50 transmissions, and they all seem to shift like they feel they want to. My G50 seemed to shift better than the 915, but I think they all need to break in after a rebuild before they're really happy. The different styled synchros in the G50s do seem to work better in the larger, heavier transmission, but none of them are as smooth as most of today's transmissions.
It seems that folks find that different gear lubes make them shift differently as well.

I just put Mobil Delvac 75W90 in mine and it is shifting better than it did with whatever the PO had in it, that's for sure.

So it's pretty much inherent design from what I gather...

My G50 with 25K original miles shifts like butter through all five gears.

When cold a bit notchy + whining , all butter smooth once warmed up. This is with Swepco gear oil.

+1 for Mobile Delvac 75W90. Worth the price. Yes, second gear is harder to engage than the other gears on the G50. Normal. Also, shifts better after warmup.
