'72 911T Convert Varioram Intake to PMO ITB??
Hi All,
I have a hot rod engine in my '72 911T ( detail here FS: Hot Rod Motor - Street or Track ) with a Varioram intake. The Varioram is too tall for the engine compartment of the car and it is being run with spacers in the engine mounts to drop the engine which I don't like. I also don't think it looks correct in an old car. Anyway, considering converting to PMO ITBs and was wondering if there are any opinions as to the potential difficulty of this? Thank for your help. Cheers, Harry. ![]() |

PMO ITBs
I imagine they should fit just fine, but why not send a fax to Rich Paar @ PMO and see if he's run into any problems?

For those who have converted varioram to ITB's - did you notice any loss of low end torque? I would think the ITB's perform best at higher RPM's and the long runner varioram would be tuned for excellent low end torque...

Thanks all for your replies.
I've been chatting with Richard at Clewett Engineering and it seems as though I will be making the swap. I'll let you all know how it goes. Mark, how is your car running with the ITBs? It sure looks good. Cheers, Harry. |

It runs great! I'm down right now replacing the front suspension and the builder remodeling our kitchen has me blocked in. Hopefully back up in a few weeks.

How about a 964 plastic resonance flap intake plenum? It is much smaller and may be able to be swapped without any change to DME. I would check with Jeff at Rothsport Welcome to Rothsport Racing for your options I would go for what works the best.

You'll loose a lot of midrange torque, but you'll gain throttle response. VRAM increases the torque between 3200 to 4300 rpm by about 25-30 ft-lbs. On a 911 motor, comparing a common plenum intake vs ITBs, excluding the VRAM boost, both optimally tuned for the fuel used and the same engine internals, normally there is not a significant ultimate power difference between the two. It's just that with ITBs, the air pressure above the butterflies becomes atmospheric the instant they are opened, creating more instant throttle response, vs a single throttle body common plenum intake, there is a slight delay from the throttle body to the intake.

Thanks All,
PMO ITBs should be on their way this week and should be on the car by the end of next week. I will let you all know how it goes. Cheers, Harry. |

Hi All,
Well, the Varioram is gone and PMOs are on. I should have some results for you by the end of the week. Cheers, Harry. ![]() |

Looks great. How easy or hard was the conversion?

My engine had a Varioram intake with EFI so removing the intake and replacing it with the PMO ITBs was a pretty simple job. The tuning of the EFI may be a bit more time consuming. Cheers, Harry. |

Jeff is very helpful - I was dealing with him just a week ago re ITBs edit: just read the rest of the thread. Looks great! What engine management are you using?

Harry998R,
What is the length of the spacers that you installed to lower the engine? Brian |

The ITBs certainly work better on the car than the Varioram. Cheers, Harry. |
