Front end Rebuild

1976 911 S Targa. Steering has just a slight bit of play. This winter I plan to rebuild the steering rack, tie rods, and.... here's where I run into trouble.

What else should I consider restoring while my sleeves are rolled up?

Already replaced MC, rebuilt calipers, new pads, and brake lines. Shocks are newish.

I've searched these posts and have a fairly good idea of how to start -- on my back under the car.

Well, you could do bushings but that is a separate, not insignificant job from the steering rack and tie rods.

New bushings can make a big difference and really tighten everything up. I replaced mine with Elephant Racing Factory Rubber style and it made a huge difference. My car rode fine prior to changing the bushings but after the new ones went in, it rode like it was brand new. The Elephant Racing site has some great tutorial videos on how to install. It took two days due to the fact that they have to sit for 24 hours before installing.

The photo below show how my bushings were worn out. After 40 years, gravity takes it toll.

My experience exactly. Considering what you have already rebuilt and plan on doing, not replacing your most likely worn out bushings with the ER bushing just doesn't make sense. As Vern states, it is really very easy to do and makes a big difference in handling. I would also take a close look at the ball joints and wheel bearings while you are in there.
