Heck, I’m only 5 not 71!
|
my vacant red light is now used for the factory alarrm armed flashing indicator. during the day the flashing light is just visible but at night it would be very noticable when the alarm is active.

Has anyone had a chance to check the owners manuel to see if there is a purpose shown for this indicator lamp?
Back to the Green wire. "Focusing on the green wire in the diagram, it appears that wire does terminate (small orange arrow below) off the guage as I read it. " In regard to the 73 diagram, here is a diagram I put together earlier in the week for the Early S Forum regarding that wire. It is in the earlier cars for the Sportmatic oil temp, and is shown unterminated by the gage. The other end at the 14 pin engine connector also has no connection except on Sportmatic engine wire harnesses. I am wondering regarding your Green being melted. I have checked the wire in my 1973.5 harness, and it has no connection at the 14 pin connector. It would not melt from a short if it was incorrectly put on one of the terminals at the gage, since the other end sits unterminated at the engine 14 connector. It makes me wonder if it is the same Green for Sportmatics, how yours melted from a short. ![]()

"ONCE UPON A TIME, the handbrake light was located at the top of that gauge. In 1976, they moved it to the dash, with the seat belt light. So, from 1976 on, there is an extra, unused light." |

I've had this '80 since '92. Have poked around doing various things under the dash but have never noticed the wrapped wire until a few days ago when dealing specifically with these guages. There's no telling what the PO did --- he could have connected the other end somewhere and this end who knows where. Your note on the other end makes me curious now --- where is the engine 14 connector? I'll take a photo of it and post for our edification. LMFAO Java!

And for those of you that have a later production SC and don't have the extra indicator light, well, it eventually went away. And, let's not include the few sportomatics out there... They had extra special (extra) lights.

I'm not questioning you, I was just curious what was shown in the manual. I know the handbrake indicator was moved in'76.

What did they do for the sporto warning on the pre-76 cars, where that top light was for the handbrake like the photo Porwolf posted? Personally, I thought all the 74-77 gauges were very similar (modulo the temp gauge sender/scale differences on the '77), and E. Sully has posted a 73.5 wiring diagram showing the top light used for "sporto temperature warning" - so do you know what year(s) had the handbrake warning there? I personally could never figure out why they didn't use that empty light in the gauge for the CIS/OXS service interval warning light instead of drilling a hole in the dash...

My 78 has that spot too . i was considering building small comparator circuit and have a light come on if my alternator hits a high and starts overcharging .. then i will still have to stock look without a voltmeter and i am protected.
i was thinking say 16.5 volts and BAM light is on. i could use a comparator and a one shot.

Note the manual transmission 0-340 F temperature gauge, which works with a '77, 3.2 or any 930 (turbo) sender; the '74-'76 with manual trans had a 0-300F gauge - and those require a different sender - same one as (at least) the '74-'76, maybe some earlier - & the SC: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Glad I found this thread. It answered my questions about the top (empty) indicator lamp on my '76 (Thank you Javadog for your response, my '76 manual doesn't mention its use in the verbiage, however the picture of the gauge does still show the brake symbol below it)
AND It answered my question about the unconnected darker solid green wire (Thank you E Sully and Discseven!). NOW, can anyone comment on why in the hell they would use a GREEN indicator (Universal for 'go' or 'good') as an idiot light for low pressure???

Actually, it has 2 male spades, but I’m not sure what to plug there either. What’s the “idiot” light? My engine is a. 2.7 CIS. |

Green wire is for Sporto oil temp, and so is the lamp hole.
