Reinstall Engine With or Without Muffler
I was installing all of the engine tin last night and I'm wondering if I should install the muffler while the engine is out of the car.
Any opinions on this? |

On a 911, you can install with the muffler on the engine. Works either way.
On 914, better to leave the muffler off. Easier to maneuver it around.

I am with yelcab1 -- the 911 allows it either way.
However, expounding a bit on the topic - I like to try to install stuff with the maximum amount of room available, and install the exhaust system from the muffler back. In other words, you can make adjustments of the crossover pipe, cat (if equipped) and muffler bolts with the engine out of the car a bit easier with the additional room. Good luck!

engine installation
Personally, I prefer to install the engine/transmission first and then bolt in the muffler. Just seems to work better on my car.

My exhaust is fairly simple as I only have SSI and muffler (no cat or crossover pipe). It's easy for me to install the muffler after the engine is in the car but since I have a couple of weeks before the install, I wanted to see how the engine would look in it's completed state. Last night I put the muffler on (but no gaskets yet) just for fun and photos.
Obviously, I'm getting anxious ![]() ![]() |

Beautiful.
I need to go back through your posts and catch up. Nice work. Regarding exhaust. Less is more sometimes. A little extra room can be a good thing.
