Points - Stock, Pertronix, HotSpark, Crane Optical
A while ago, on advice of a friend, I put Pertronix points in my car to see if it would resolve a missing problem. In the transaction, my tach stopped working. I'm getting ready to put the original points back in to see if my tach starts working again, but that set me to wondering what would really be my best permanent point choice. My car was originally a 2.4; re-built to 2.7; has Webers and CIS. I don't race it - Like most, I don't mind extra power, but reliability and drivability are my top priorities.
Any thoughts on the best points choice? HotSpark, Pertonix, Crane Optical, mechanical? |

I was having lots of ignition problems, and had pertronix installed. Upon the advice of Steve grosekemper, I switched back to points, and have to say , it definitely runs smoother. Would also love to hear others thoughts.

Points are the way to go although you'll hear from a lot of pertonix fans here. I installed a pertonix unit on my 74 and it developed a stumble at part throttle removed it replaced with points been fine for 10 years. A friend of mine had the same issue with his Corvette.

Your car has Webbers and cis, or did have Webbers, now has cis?
You are about to start the great ignition debate, grabbing pop corn.

My car ran OK with points, but I switched to Pertronix out of laziness so that I wouldn't have to adjust and fiddle with the points any more.
Now the car runs OK with the Pertronix and I don't have to adjust or fiddle. Everything else (tach, etc.) still works fine, too. No issues. I can say that the car runs 'better', because it never gets out of adjustment, which was my only reason for the switch.
