stuborn bolt
I am in the midst of removing my original carpet from my 87 carrera.
The bolt of one of the rear seat belts is almost round from my attempkts to remove it, I saturated it with bolt removal oil, tried? to drill it and it just will not move and can no longer fit sockets... Any suggestions |

Weld a nut to the remaining head.

Cold chisel and hammer; make a slot on the top of the bolt oriented like the slash on your keyboard, and not the backslash. Try to make the bold turn by hitting your chisel at an angle. I got all of mine out that way with one exception. The last one had to be drilled out to remove as much metal as I could and then hit what was left with the aforementioned hammer and chisel!

Craftsman Damaged Bolt Removal Set
or Irwin Bolt Extractors Both work great! Mac, Snap On, and Matco and others all make damaged bolt removers also but the craftsman set works great and it's readily available.

Bring the HEAT! May be difficult if the area is surrounded by carpet (flammable) material. But in my experience nothing beats heating the snot out of the offending nut. Apply flame to the nut, not the threads. Although I don't have an acetylene torch, I've had decent luck with a torch using MAPP gas vs. propane.

Same thing happened to me this summer. I used a craftsman damaged bolt removal socket that was ever so slightly smaller than the damaged bolt head and forced it onto the rounded head with a hammer. Once it was pounded on the damaged bolt I used my 1/2" impact driver to remove it very slowly. Worked well. Good luck.

Easier way, no welding or banging.
One of the bolts holding my rear lap belts was similarly too tight and I ruined the head. I simply drilled a hole in the center and used a good ol "easy out". Probably only used them once or twice ever. Put a good size hole in the bolt using a bolt that did come out to make sure I wasn't too big. The bolt steel isn't hard material, any good drill will do the trick. I put some masking tape around the area to keep shavings out of my rear carpet which is glued.

If it's one of the inner bolts on the tunnel, the welded on nut/bung is accessible from under the car. Crawl under and inspect/spray that end with penetrant as well. The end of the bolt is exposed under there and can get corroded.
I have had to use a hand impact driver on a couple of those as well as the hinge bolts for the folding rear seat backs. Hope you get it out. Cooper |
