Electrical Help Requested - Fogs

Hi there...

Just reconditioned fog lights and got them working then moved on to wiring up a low beam relay. Now that the relay is in and working my fogs stopped working. Could the relay affect the fogs - shouldn't right?

> Before low beam relay installed: headlights on, fog switch pulled, switch lights up and fogs work fine.

> After low beam relay installed: headlights on, fog switch pulled, switch DOES NOT light up and fog lights DO NOT work.

Double checked bulbs - Bypassed everything with 12V direct to fogs and they light up. Checked all fuses and all are OK.

Any ideas or direction is appreciated!

Tom

tangential, but you might want to consider moving the fog light lead from the low beam fuse to the parking light fuse (adjacent?) -- that would let you run the fog lights independently of the low beams (which is nice to do when you REALLY need fog lights) and may well indirectly resolve your issue.

For your '81...

It may be as simple as you moved the fused wire that supplied power to the grey fog lamp wire to another fuse, or you have your high beams on.

If you want the fogs to be independent of the Hi/Lo beams just move the grey wire from fuse 6 to fuse 2...

Here is the '81 factory drawing for your fog lamp circuit. Note the US only version versus the ROW version of where the grey wire to the fog lamp switch is fused from.

Use the '81 drawing for your '81, other years are wired differently...

Thank you all... Your posts and photos have helped me figure this out (I think!).

1) My heavy grey wire that was supposed to be on the bottom of #6 was actually on the top. I used it by accident to tap into what I thought was my high beam circuit for one of my relays. I should have used the white wire next to it on top of #7. High beams still worked normally - just without the relay.

2) The low beam circuit was correctly tapped into the yellow wire on top of #5. For this reason, my low beam relay worked OK - running stock sugar scoops with new Cibie lenses and H4 lamps and I love the much improved light output!

3) I think my fogs were down since I disconnected the grey trigger wire and used it incorrectly as part of the high beam relay noted above. I suspect a prior owner improperly placed it on top of #6. I'd like to place it at bottom of #2 per Dennis or #11 as Gerry suggests to isolate my fogs from my low beams.

Heading out to straighten this all out now.

Many thanks!

Fixed! Thank you!!

Prior owner had the grey wire on top of fuse #6 - I inadvertently used it for my high beam relay. Corrected by using white wire from #7 and moved grey to bottom of #2.

Thats for sure. On my '84 Carrera, the grey fog wire was on the bottom of #5 fuse (low beam-right). I moved it to the bottom of #4 fuse (Front/rear parking lights-left).

Those little German engineers try very hard to keep us on our toes!

Yes! Fogs are now working on low beam and high beam or just with side markers on. Thanks so much for offering me some clues and pointing me in the right direction!!
