What does a paint job cost in your area?

I was wondering what people are paying these days for a full 911 re-spray or a color change paint job?

St. Pete, FL is ~$2500

It totally depends on how good of a job you want done and how much work it needs before it goes into the booth.

Out here, assuming the vehicle is in good condition with no previous damage repair, just worn paint with some dings here and there and zero rust, $6K and up for a Porsche-worthy job for everything.

$2500, you must be kidding me. Of course it depends on what you want. Paint jobs go from a few hundred to whatever you want to spend. I've seen $10K paint jobs that I thought the guy got ripped off badly.

Spraying is the shortest step. When we did mine we spent days taking the car apart and days prepping and priming and sanding and repeat. Doors are best worked on off the car as are deck lids and bumpers. And it is best to take all the glass off the car and the rubber.

Once the spraying is done, the color sanding takes days as does the buffing. All those days add up to a lot of hours. And I did not mention bodywork.

$2500 is awfully low. Decent primer and paint will be over $500.00 other materials another $200.00. 150 to 200 hours of labor adds up.

New rubber seals will run another $500 or so.

so to do it right is VERY expensive. Ask a guy who has done it a few times.

I paint aircraft but not cars, they are a lot harder and labor intensive, but the cost is about the same= $8-10K (plus tax)

Not many do 911s in St. Pete. Referred to you by your Porsche tech?

$2500 is that Superior Autobody on US 19?

BTW - I know Joe - this is for a car that is primarily tracked. It has cracked clear coat now. I'm not sure I would do a $$$$ paint job on it.

$2,500 will get you a low quality job. I would say $5,000 is the LOW end and a quality job is closer to $7,500 to $10,000. That is a lot of money for car that may only be worth 15 grand. I know one shop in Gainesville TX that does Concours quality jobs only. He paints million dollar Ferrari's and his bottom end cheapest re-spray is 25 grand. It will look better than new when he is done but that is for a show car not a driver.

You can save alot on a paint job by doing some of the work yourself (if you are mechanically inclined and have the time). I have had cars painted and painted some myself. I will always at least dissasemble the car myself. The rest depends on how much free time I have and how dirty I want to get my garage.

A local shop that is very reputable and familiar with painting older 911s ballparked $4-5k without seeing my car if I did things like removed rubber, lights, etc. Stuff that costs labor but doesn't involve painting the car (but it adds up quick). That included removing current paint.

paint in Mount Vernon, WA

$8500 for a glass out, down to bare metal reshoot. That does not include the new seals or undercoating.

I've had two cars repainted by professionals.
1st car is a 1988 SAAB SPG. This was the drop off car, wait six-seven months, then pick up car and drive away. There was also a lot of extra work done like painting bumpers, wheels, etc... Total cost was right around 10K in 1988. This is a very good paint job. Very slight orange peel in some spots which probably could be buffed out. It has held up very well over the last 10 years. I did no work myself.

2nd car is 1982 Porsche SC. This car was a 3/4 DIY and 1/4 pro paint job. I brought the car in completely disassembled. They prepped the body, painted it, did some orange peel sanding and additional clearcoat painting. Then I did the final color sanding and reassembled the car. The pro piece costed 3K for this one.

I'm very satisfied with the turnout of both cars. Always spend the extra money to make sure the painter is using top quality product. If they cheap out on the product, it doesn't matter how many hours goes into the rest of it.

SoCal prices, for quality work, are between $7K - $10K depending on condition (this is for a completely rust-free car). With Glasurit paint (Maaco doesn't know what that is!) approaching $500/gallon, and the air quality folks requiring water-based base coat, it ain't cheap! Do disassembly and assembly - save a bundle!

You guys are pretty much on the mark, 7-10k or a little more for extra body woork (ie fitting a carbon fiber hood and FG ducktail...plus some old damage).

Mine is ~13k but this will be concours quality (like the other cars they put out, there is no skimping on body prep however and if you do it will show in the long run.

Also se my thread "whitest white.."

I've been told a decent paint job for my 911 would cost $5-8k here in the metro Detroit area.

I have been looking into the same here in Houston ...

$4000-$5000 for a respray, some minor body work, minimal removal of glass and seals.

$8000-$10,000 for a dismantle, new seals and some bodywork.

As stated above lots of labor time to do it right ...

Jeremy,

Referred to by PM, he does all of his race cars and does awesome work. It would be windows out but not trunk are but underside of hood would get sprayed. I have to have the new bumpers painted, and I got a quote which I too thought was low, but I have seen this guys work. I will start thread this week on my project, which will include weight removal numbers and pics. This has been a blast! Paint is undecided until next week.

I have you rubber plug, you should stop by and the see the ride this weekend.
