Watkins Glen, huh? I love that place. Great Porsche heritage. Fantastic roads. The International Motorsport Research Library. Etc, etc. And we could even do timed laps on the 'old street circuit'!

Update:
Response has been very good. Current thinking is an early meet somewhere in southern Michigan or northern Indiana/Ohio - possibly Indy. Probably 3 weeks before the 'Big One' at Monterey. This would put us in April with - obviously - questionable weather (could be 75 degrees and sunny or could be snowing). We could set a Saturday date with either Sunday or the following weekend as a rain date. Also, preliminary plans are underway for a second meet at Watkins Glen on the June 6-8 weekend. not a member, but I'd be more than willing to make the trip and bring my roommate and his 72 911 in tow.

Hmm...
I've got to plate and insure the racecar in order to break in the motor... No heat or amenities though... WHat about the Chicago area, I'd be there for sure! Indy's a bit far to travel in the race car...

Chicago area is a possibility Chris. Although for me it would have to be somewhere that didn't require actually driving through that traffic jam they call the Chicago metro area!!! -- Curt

For the past two years, the Musikstadt, Kentucky, and Southern Indiana regions of PCA have hosted a get together called "The Visit" at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY. This was to celebrate the connection between Porsche and Corvette designer. Last year, Bruce Anderson (yes, Bruce the author), Tom Charlesworth (PCA Head Tech) and Bob Miller (PCA Prez)were there, along with about 60 cars, including a museum quality 904 and speedster, and Bob Akin's 962. A dyno was set up in the parking lot. We got to tour the Corvette plant while the visiting Corvette guys didn't.
The 2003 event is in the planning stages but so far is listed as being on the first weekend in May. My inside info says that they are planning a bigger event next year with a celebrity speaker for the banquet. I'd like to suggest that this event be considered for the Mid West R-Gruppe get together - if not, plan on comming down! More info will be available at www.corvet****seum.com under events, "The Visit 3.0" Jim |

Jim, I've heard of this event. To be honest, I've always thought it quite strange that Porsche guys would meet at the Corvette museum. I must be missing something here. What is the connection????????? -- Curt |

why not organize a meet at putnam park near indy for a track day/gettogether/picnic. the track is nice and can be rented for about $3500.00 a day i think. you get 20-30 people that want to run their cars there at $150-200.00 for the day and have a nice car show type get together. schedule a nice drive through the country side and it should be quite a nice day. just my 2cents....

Cegerer,
What sort of venue are you looking for? I agree with the Chicago Metro traffic being a hassle for a lot of people. If we have a lot of Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois people a good bet might be south Chicago, but not such a great area for lots of expensive cars... I certainly could coordinate something west of Chicago that provided a good parking area and amenities, or, for a more central location, Northern Indiana (near the lake) would provide a good place that's off major interstates for everyone... Indiana Dunes Area. I'll be there if I can... Depends on distance for me, 5 hours in a racecar on public roads might be a bit much, but if it turns out to be closer, I'm definitely game(y).

We're just looking for a place to meet that is surrounded by some interesting driving roads with a few stops along the way. If the 'place to meet' happens to be something more than just a mundane parking lot (like maybe the infield at the Indy Speedway or some type of event or whatever??), well, that's all the better. I don't invision a DE event included in this since it would take way too much organization and time. I'm looking at a 1 day event to test the waters and see what kind of response we get. Based upon that, I'm sure we'll all have a better idea on what/where/when/how to plan the 2nd event.
BTW, what's going on at Gingerman this Spring? There's some nice roads around there. We could shoot up along the coast of Lake Michigan thru Saugatuck, Holland and Grandhaven or something like that? -- Curt |

Well the driving roads are okay... Lots of local law enforcement though. Used to go riding on the Ducati all the time up there...
Gingerman offers a lot of track days to people, but impossible to rent on the weekends... The best driving around here I know of is Indiana Dunes Area, arund Starved Rock state park in Illinois, and in Wisconsin... Hmmm... Interesting stops... We used to do an "Alphabet Tour" in Wisconsin on bikes... Many roads named with letters and lots of twisties... Just started on one letter and wound around to the next... GREAT fun! THis is something I could help plan, and would even consider a multi-day event if enough people were interested.

Let me third the notion for Cincinnati. (Fourth?) It's a little bit of a drive for me, but I'm not in the RGruuuuupe age range anyway, so hmpf.
Besides, since part of the gig is getting food, we can all descend upon some unsuspecting Cincinnati Chili parlor and get some 5-ways. (For the uninitiated: a 5-way is chili, spaghetti, beans, onions, and shredded cheddar. And the chili isn't like anything you've ever had before.)

Doesn't sound like the location of this road fits into any of the venues suggested so far, but if anyone has to travel anywhere near this to get to the meet, it's worth the effort. Hwy 26 in eastern Ohio where is runs through the Wayne Nat'l forest is absolutely perfect for spirited driving. I got introduced to this road on a PCA club tour last fall. 40+ miles of tight twisties, posted at 55mph with numerous 15-30mph corners. The best part is that if there is any local traffic, you can just slow down until they turn off to pursue their mundane lives, then continue on your joyous way. With more than 40 miles of twisties, the break is actually welcomed so you can relax a little. During our hour plus on this road there was limited local traffic and no police seen.

Well an interesting thought... If you had it at the Southern tip of Lake Michigan, it would sort of be in the center point between Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin... No more than 2-3 hours for anyone I would think. If you do it before the really warm season, there would be plenty of parking at the beach/state park areas...
I can see the headlines... Germans invade the Dunes!
