How fast is my Carrera?

I went on a club run today. I'm so psyched - an excellent morning.

This was my first time to push it near top speeds in the year I've owned it. Never driven more than 170kmph. Today on an open highway I stretched it out!

My concentration was on the road more than the gauges but I saw 210kmph (130mph) with a rpm around 5800 in 4th gear. Does this sound right?

So this leads to my main question, what would be my top speed in fifth? Is there a way of calculating it?

Sorry if this has been asked before, couldn't find it with a quick search.

I had several people (Boxster, 993 Turbo and 996 Turbo owners)comment my car seemed really fast. I'm serious reconsidering my plans for a turbo. These guys just couldn't get enough straight road to spool up. I'm thinking the 3.6 route might be more for me.

Anyhow, if you have comments or answers to the above I'd appreciate your response.

Mark, My '87 Carrera gets to 152 in 5th/6200rpm. Your speed sounds correct. Mine has stock gearing etc. be careful out there!! I attained my top speed at Pocono Raceway so it was pretty safe. Have fun with the car!!

With stock tires my '86 hit an indicated 152mph - several times. My speeding disease is in remission now.

I'm going to go check my gearing. Hitting 6000RPM in 4th on the track today showed *about* 190KMH. I think the factory quoted "Hoechstgeschwindigkeit" is 245KMH.

my owners manual states the top speed of my 87 cab
at 149 mph. mine has had a slant nose conversion and
turbo fender flairs so i would think my actual speed to
be down from that because of actual drag of the modified
body.

Your RPM to Speed ratio seems to be right on the ball. My 87 will top out at 160 or so. Only upgrades are prformance chip and K&N

In my experience, the speedos on Porsche's are optimistic but mine would top out at an indicated 152. Actually that might be the correct speed considering I had a Eurospec motor at the time. The only time I've seen get higher than that was when I had 9x16's with 245/45's on the rear. The speedo was at 159 and still going when I let off the gas - an amusing bit of speedo error.

using the gear ratios of a US Carrera with a G50 and the stock 225 50 16 tire height the top speed should be in the neighborhood of 150mph (149-155) depending upon whether you hit 6200 in 5th or you can get closer to the rev limit. The euro cars have slightly taller gears, I think, so may top out between 153 and 158. For you to have been at 130 in 4th (not 5th) at only 5800 rpm's sounds like your speedo was reading a bit optimistically like most of them do.

My 87, with correct size tires, has a speedo that is exactly 10% fast at all speeds. This verified with a GPS. 152 in my car would actually be 138.
