speaker placement
Hello all
Firstly Happy NewYear to everyone here, I hope 2015 is a great one for all ! I am in a bit of a dilemma as to where to mount my speakers. My "70 T didn't have the top dash grille so no possibility of mounting there ... I have brand new door pockets in perfect condition and so don't want to vandalise the front pocket like other cars I've seen. I am going for a concours/show winner finish to the car and don't want to add rear boxes or cut the parcel shelf ... I am thinking of installing my 5.25" speakers in the carpet map pockets in the footwells. I have seen other cars with this and it looks great, and appears to be my only option. Anyone done this install ? I'm thinking I'll need to reinforce the carpet (most likely with thin ply wood) Otherwise is there anything else I need to watch out for or modify ? Any help would be really appreciated Regards Eddie ... heres a photo to help clarify ! ( Later car but same idea) ![]() ![]() |

Here's a way to install speakers without doing any cutting and still getting good sound - Much under dash and Clover rear shelf enclosures. They turn up on this sites as well as others. To brighten the highs, you can also place tweeter on the dash held on with black goop that cleans off easily.

Hi Sergio
Thanks for your reply, I really like the custom rear deck, as modifications go thats the best I've seen. I have an under-dash cover but stupidly I bought the one without the speaker moldings ... doh! With the one I got there wasn't really enough space to mount anything bigger than a 3" driver so without spending mega bucks on really powerful baby 3" speakers its not really an option. I saw somewhere (now can't find it again) an installation where the guy had fitted 5 or 6" speakers into the front of footwell carpet map pocket. Funnily enough I just checked mine and its already backed with a strong card or something so possibly this could be my best option ? Regards Eddie |

Eddie,
What's wrong with replacing the existing door speakers with good quality 5 1/2" speakers? Get the co-axial type that have a directional tweeter, so you can aim it. Diamond audio or JL make some amazing speakers that fit in the stock location. They would also hide behind the original grills. The addition of a small 2 channel amp would help kick-up the sound. If you found the need for additional bass, a Kicker self-powered sub fits nicely under the seat. Tony

"I am going for a concours/show winner finish to the car"
I would personally not install speakers where there was never speakers.

Would you be so kind as to share some photos of your Kenwood enclosed sub? I'd really like to see this.

Kenwood KSC-SW11 Compact powered subwoofer at Crutchfield.com
as far as putting speakers under your dash.... well that would be like routing your exhaust into the cabin - sure it will get the job done but you will not be happy with the results.

Thanks for all the replies,
I'm split between trying the carpet map pocket install and fitting them behind the static front door pocket... The problem is I don't think the second option looks good at all ,also I work as an audio engineer and know that the reflection of audio waves will ruin the speaker drivers pretty quick. Also the sound quality can't be great. I agree under-dash is a fix but looks awful and I know of people saying they're cover drops down with the weight of the speakers. I also agree about not putting speakers where there weren't any in the first place but I need a good sound in this car as I'm installing an amp and Aux(ipod) jack. Its a real dilemma |

but overall I'm leaning towards the footwell option as this will direct the speakers in the right direction and is pretty unobtrusive ... anyone done this ? I'm thinking that once installed I'll seal the enclosure with a cut piece of ply across the top to get the bass to sound right and possibly cut a couple of ports into the carpet (again for bass reflex)

Can anyone tell me if I can install these sections of the carpet first (footwell map pocket carpeting) ?
If so I'll get on with the install and post up some photos |

You can make an enclosure to go there, then cover it in carpet. The problem you face is that it's a lousy place to put speakers. It's way too low, there's not a lot of depth there and a 5-1/4 inch speaker isn't going to make any decent sounds anyway. I've been down this road before. You can't get very good sound in a 911, unless you do an awful lot of work and then the installation won't be unobtrusive. A '70 911 is a very noisy car inside, which makes it much harder. Consider an i-pod and headphones... JR |

I have JBL 6 1/2" component door speakers and a 200W Blaupunkt "under seat" powered subwoofer. My Alpine head unit has a HP and LP filter built in so I can direct low frequencies away from the doors. The sound is brilliant!

I think a lot of folks are missing the point here, Eddie911T's car is a 70, not like the car pictured in the first photo, it hasn't been outfitted with door speakers, and it sounds like Eddie911T doesn't want to modify the door panel for speakers. I can't blame him. So, 6 1/2" speakers won't fit. I believe his dash Should be fitted with a center removable grille, where he could fit a pair of 4" speakers to fill in some high's but it sounds like his particular dash doesn't have the speaker grille.
I like the idea of the Moch rear speakers, and even a sub under the seat if you really want audio, but it sounds like Eddie911T wants some front fill, who could blame him. |

Hey Sonett
Thanks you understand exactly what I'm saying, I also don't want to cut my brand new Basket-weave door panels they cost a lot of $'s. I'm gonna go the route of installing them in the footwell map pocket. Theres enough room for the speaker + this carpet is already backed with pretty sturdy card. Ok you loose these pockets but hey what are the door pockets for then ? Its not original but then in the 21st century people like to have a great sounding music system, (that can be heard over the engine). I am really considering the rear shelf by Moch, thats a great design and I think you can get them with a Amp pre-installed. Interesting... Last edited by eddie911T; 01-15-2015 at 05:35 AM.. |

seems like a good compromise to me, let the moch speakers on the rear shelf give you some mid-fill, let your footwell speakers give you some front staging, you still might want some small tweeters on top of the dash at the corners, or somewhere else, but you should be able to get some decent sound, and the sub under the seat is a nice touch if you can get the mid's and high frequencies you need.

The rear shelf Clover enclosure that I had had two-way 10X4s. But these enclosures were originally made with cutout for various size speakers.
In addition to the under-dash and rear shelf enclosures, I also had a Subaru (Panasonic) powered sub-woofer under the passenger seat. Hookup consisted of a power and ground wires and a signal wire linked to on of the (+) rear speaker wires. ![]()

You are an audio engineer?
You should realize that speakers in the existing footwell carpet pieces is NEVER going to sound good.
