72 4 sp 915 Question

I've been cleaning up my transmission and have a couple questions... There's a bracket on a stud that the PET describes as the "retaining bracket for clutch cable - 901 423 369 00". Mine has a broken canvas strap hanging there. What's supposed to be hanging from the bracket to capture the cable? Sorry, it a bad pic but here's mine (it may be a little more clear on the bigger pic further down):

It appears the PO JB welded an area around the speedo shaft (highlighted.) There doesn't appear to be any cracking or oil leaking. Is this a big concern. The speedo output appears to be out-putting:

When I parked the car, the trans shifted fine except for the completely worn shift linkage. I'm guessing the life of a 915 subjected to a 2.4T wasn't too harsh. I plan to reinstall with new fluid, new clutch plate and bearing as it has an aluminum PP. Is there anything else I should check while it's out?

Gratuitous pic:

That's a broken ground strap in your first picture. You will need to replace it before reinstall.

I believe the braided copper ground strap is on the other side, #39. It's sitting intact on my bench. The bracket I'm talking about is #36. The cotton strap is connected to the L bracket:

Sorry, my bad. I was on my phone and not totally paying attention. Whatever that cotton strap is, it is not stock.

The clutch cable bracket would be farther forward, on the front of the box:

You wouldn't have the 2nd bracket with the omega helper spring. You are going to have one of the earlier arms. It's a good upgrade to switch everything over to the later stuff.

On that backup switch, I personally would shop for a good used tailcone. I don't trust those sorts of repairs.

I was going to post WTB for a tail cone and see what happens. I found I had more questions than answers. Are the mag and aluminum tail cones interchangeable? Mags were produced 72-76. Should I want one over the other?

Then, can you just swap them out? I must admit a certain lack of knowledge about transmissions in general, especially a magic box like the 915.

I think that "JB Weld" is actually whats left of the factory speedo cable anti-tampering seal..Porsche used it to validate the mileage, an unmolested speedo, for serious warranty claim purposes. It was spread over the end of the speedo cable and output shaft. There was a dab of that stuff up at the speedometer head/cable too.

Always got scraped/broken off when the speedo cable was eventually replaced.

Hopefully your not replacing the tail cone because of the speedo anti-tampering seal.

the canvas strap is what my 915 (1974) has for a clutch cable support.

Thaks, DB. Replacing the tail cone was simply suggested above. It wouldn't be a bad idea if there were damage lurking underneath. When I recognized the JB weld goop, I remember thinking whoever did the job was excellent at it. If it's factory, that would explain a lot. I'll look up next to the speedo to compare.

And thanks for verifying the strapping, Peon77. I have some old US Air Force name straps I was going to repurpose. I now think that's the plan. Bruce's Tywraps sounded too...modern.
