Noob question about jacking the rear of a '77 Carrera up

I realize this has probably been asked a thousand times, but I really don't want to damage the car trying to jack it up. The car is a 1977 911 3.0 Carrera, but I just want to know which way is the best for jacking the rear of the car to get both wheels off the ground. I've heard of lifting it from the sump plate, from the transmission case, etc. I know where to put the jack stands, I just need to actually get the car in the air, and I only have 1 floor jack.

(Again, sorry about re asking the question. I'm new to Porsches and theres only so much that watching instructionals and reading walkthroughs can get you until you get hands on experience.)

Jack it up so your jack's pad is centered on the bottom of the steel engine carrier at the rear of the engine case. With some jack pads you can hook the rim of the pad on this steel piece. With some this won't work, or isn't safe, so it is better to have much of the pad forward under the very rear of the engine case, which is strong.

Do not use the sump, and do not use the transmission for this purpose.

I often lift the engine by its sump when removing or reinstalling, and when pulling both engine and transmission I lift at the front of the engine, because both are their respective balance points. But the heavy lifting of car and power train is best done from the rear of the engine. I've never had a problem doing this, and I've done it a lot.

Or you can jack up one side of the car with the usual lollipop jack piece, insert jack stands, and then jack up the other side and slide in the stand.

Do a search using jacking points. You will find this thread and a reprint of Bill Verburgs recommendations.

Thanks Walt and Harry for the advice. I used Walt's method of putting the pad on the very rear of the engine case and I'm happy to report that no drama was experienced. I also put a wood block to spread the weight out a bit more so it wouldn't put so much strain on one small part, even if it was strong enough on it's own. Sorry once more for the newbie question, but I couldn't find any specific constant information than just jacking it from the sump plate, so I wanted to be sure.
