Just checked with mechanical gauge, dash is correct. My car will get to 220 degrees, I don't like it! Jeff says it must be the engine thermostat? Now that I replaced the oil cooler stat. I ordered the thermo wrap from summit. Allot of people say the wrap will ruin the headers? Jeff says its not what is making the engine run hot because with moving air flow a non issue. I never have to sit in traffic where I live. To me wrapping the oil return tube doesn't make sense, since it holds the heat in? I really don't want to wrench on my engine to replace thermostat. Want to leave Sunday for RennWerks. What to do?

Have Steve Wong express mail you one of his header chips and be done with it. Forget the wrap.
As a bonus, it will probably run better also.

220 is not that bad. Most run 210 anyway. Can you get it hotter under load, or is that just at idle in traffic? No load in slow traffic. Think what the poor saps put up with in Phoenix.

Thanks for all of the input. I just spoke with Steve Wong and sent pics of my system.
He thinks its running lean, so do i.
Its 220ish just in normal, not in traffic on 77 degree day.
I have had many 911's, never had one run this hot.
Just not comfortable with those numbers.
Going for chip and new thermostat.
Over kill better than issues in the way to Monterey.

Now the plot thickens. I think the chip is a good idea. I think I'd dyno and then chip but I'm sure Steve knows enough about the setup to get you going.

Talked at length with Steve, and sent pictures of my exhaust system. He has similar B&B into GT3 muffler with straight thru option. He is mapping a custom chip for me tomorrow, I will have it Wed. Feeling confident that I have been running lean with old chip and new exhaust. I know low to mid performance will increase. If there is still running hot I will change Thermostat. I will do what ever it takes. I love my M491, and anxious to get on the road to RennWerks. I will report when I know more.

All right, all right!!
I will ditch the bricks and get bigger jack stands.

Elombard, Im running a B7B 2 in- 2 out muffler.
Also, I have a stainless braided line that came from B&B.
Its a snug fit, but I like it because its out of the way

I was asking the OP, I thought that might have somehow been related to his overheating problem.

GTC, I did as instructed!
Steve Wong did a custom chip, over nighted, installed today.
As advertised......so much more grunt from 2500 to 4000 its really amazing.
Even more fun to drive! I know it doesn't make sense, but my GT3 exhaust sounds different? Deeper, louder, just different. It also lowered my driving temp enough to show me its not the thermostat. Must have been a bit lean.
Thanks for all of the input.
Very pleased! Now I will be in the coral at RennWerks.

I see you have some sort of special braided line for you engine oil return line. You also routed it under the trany. I have a line much like this in my car, installed by PO but they routed it up and over the trany. Is this a decent line? Who sells it? My routing resulted in it hitting the cv joint and it's now nicked up the braiding.

I have a SW chip too, and I feel the engine performs even better now with the headers.

I chose to wrap mine before installation.
Perhaps that has something to do with it.
On 100' days here in N Texas, in stop and go traffic, my temps barely get over the first white line (sorry, dont have a numeric Temp gauge)

As for oil temps, normal range is 180-220F I try not to exceed the 220, synthetic oils can tolerate no more than 250F. Bottom line is give the motor enough oil cooling ability to keep it in the 200-220 range if possible.

Today, '83 SC Row w/ 9.8-1 comp, Carrera oil cooler running in 105 degrees @ 70-80 mph on an uphill grade for 40 min.
210 max. Once it leveled out 205.
