How to test tach before sending
I'm pretty sure my tach from my '73 911 is toast, but I'd really like to know for sure before shipping it all the way from Maryland to North Hollywood Speedo. What type of place would be likely to have the gear to test it?

Just need a function generator. apply 12V power and ground. Then put a 12V square wave signal into the tach. sweep the frequency and the needle should move.

Getting the tach out requires removing the steering wheel and column shroud. I'd really feel like I was putting someone out to ask them to do that.
What kind of place would have a function generator? |

You should be able to pull the tach on a 73. The clamshell is smaller than the earlier ones that require removal.
Any electronics test lab should have a function generator. I have one if you want to send it to TX.

No, you do not have to remove the steering wheel or the clam shell.
It is tight but can be done. Just pull out the clock or fuel level gauge and reach in and push. You can also come in from the frunk.

Can you make the assembly of electrical parts diagrammed by Warren in this thread? If so, I think you can test the tach yourself
tach question
