You check all electrical connections? Did you check to make sure the green wire by the distributor is connected? Just throwing ideas out there.

Dumb question but have you verified the wires are on the correct cylinders?

On the distributor side, I verified the firing order. Starting with number 1 cylinder which points at the small groove on distributor body, so my rotor then spins ccw... the next would be 6-2-4-3-5 in the firing order . That is all correct. The vacuum hoses are all connected, there all in the center of the motor, none were in my way.. The only wire I disconnected was the wire that goes to my ac compressor.. I didn't even put the compressor back on the car. Thanks, I appreciate the help...tomorrow is my last day at work, off for thanksgiving holiday, and I want to drive my car... I honestly feel like an idiot.. But, tend to see life as a learning experience. Life is good. |

Do a compression test, that may indicate your issue. No compression, back to the valves.

I haven't checked my valves without draining the oil, but I'm thinking it's not totally necessary; you may lose a bit but not much. Anyone else had the valve covers off without draining the oil?

Yes, just Jack up one side if the car and adjust that side, then the other. You rotate the engine more, but not a big deal.

Without actually being there it's impossible to offer much more. My approach has always been if I've been under the hood and something is now amiss vs before the work....the events are connected. It's possible a new problem has occurred out of the blue, but not likely. I can't imagine that the valves are set so tight that they are always open....it would take some effort to get the operation that far wrong. If you can assure us that the leads are all heading to the right place it seems to leave the connections of the leads to either the distributor or plugs. Good luck

Here's something basic you don't seemed to have tried yet: pull the fuel pump fuse (so you don't flood the cylinders), then pull a plug lead off and put in a known good plug. Place plug on engine somewhere and get someone to crank the engine. Check for spark. Repeat for other 5 plug leads. Chances are one or more plugs not firing. If all are firing check for fuel.

What about the wires not seating on the plugs? When I did my valves the first time one of the plug wires wouldn't firmly connect to the plug (I think it was #5). Engine ran as you describe. Did you get a positive "click" when putting the wires back on the plugs?

Well, I re-grouped and dug back into re-checking and re-adjusting my valves...I had a couple a little too tight..Checked and re-adjusted all of them... Car fired right up and ran good. The valves were the problem.
Now, I have a new problem. Now it sounds like I have a couple a little to loose. I can hear some ticking valve noise... Runs good though. Looks like I may have to re-adjust again Tighter... what's the repercussions of running them loose, and with a little ticking sound..It drives me crazy.. I think my valves were good before I began to adjust them. The reason I set out to adjust them, was because I didn't know when they were last adjusted. Life is Good. Thanks guys..the info and help is appreciated. |

It's probably OK -- "a little ticking sound" sounds like it's supposed to sound. From what I've read, valves that are little loose are not a problem. Over-tight valves, on the other hand, are -- in retrospect, I think you were wise not to have run the motor until it got hot (tight exhaust valves that do not seat properly can overheat).
So maybe just enjoy the car and take a break. If you're really concerned you can post an audio of the car running. |

The ticking noise is very Subtle... not loud. The car runs beautiful, as I reflected.
