A bunch of questions (carpet material, headliner install, window frame removal)

Hi Folks -

Running down the list of things I want to accomplish on my 911 in the near future. I want to replace my dash as it is warped and cracked. Knowing the front window will be out and my headliner is ripped I might as well slide down that slope and just finish off my interior. I have a couple questions I'd like some help on:

1. Carpet material - I'm thinking of replacing the carpet as mine is looking a bit tired. There are 3 different types of "RS" kits our host offers; Perlon, plush, and silverknit. It looks like Perlon is the type of carpet found in the trunk lining? Can anyone explain the other two?

2. Headliner install - I've read a few accounts of DIY installation and think I'd like to try it myself. How difficult is it really? Is it a matter of patience and using binder clips? Or is there some serious skill involved?

3. Front door window frame removal - The black anodizing on my window frames is letting the car down a bit. Is there a good tutorial on how to disassemble the door? I don't want to go into this blindly as I'm worried with all the multiple adjustments I'll screw something up big time.

Thanks for the input!

-S

Bentley manual has info on door frame removal also several old posts on the subject. Can't help you with the other two.

Plush is Domestic nylon punch carpet, not up to Porsche quality IMO. A Pelican friend
of mine put in the Appbiz plush RS kit and is now upgrading to Sliverknit (correct spelling).
Sliverknit is the ultra fine filament plush that came stock in late '70s and all '80s 911s.

I bought a Sliverknit carpet set from these folks in Belgium, fantastic quality. They offer the RS set for an upgrade price, plus, you can get any color you want. Given the strong dollar
(1Euro=$1.06 currently) I found even with shipping from Europe (I think it was $46)
I received the highest quality product cheaper than any source I found in the US.
Took three weeks to deliver.

Headliner is a DIY project. Not hard, just take your time and go slow. There are several good threads that will point you in the right direction. Time consuming because all the glass needs to come out but we'll worth the effort.

I just got done a headliner in my 1980 930. I was sweating this for some reason. It was possibly the easiest thing I did in the entire restoration.

Buy yourself a bunch of those clips from office supply store. Hang headliner in car, it helps to have a second set of hands, but I did it myself.

I made sure everything was tight and in place, and let it sit like that over night, wrinkles came out and I was able to stretch it a bit more after sitting.

I did not use spray glue, but a cup and brush and glued a little bit at a time as I went around. Came out perfect.

this is good to hear... i might tackle this too next spring. did your car have a sunroof being a ROW it may not i reckon. is the sunroof cars much harder to trim? if you have pics of your job it would be great reference for me.

happy thanksgivings

Sunroof cars are actually easier since you're not dealing with the ribs and the sunroof area allows for additional gluing points where you can pull and stretch from to get the best finished product.

Removing the window frames is not hard at all and pretty straight forward. There's 5-6 allen nut screws that hold it in place in several areas. There is one that you'll need to remove the interior door panel to access.
