Question for the Engine Gurus
Is this repairable (see pic below) in any way or is this engine toast? I'm sure it also depends on what's going on inside but is the crack repairable?
It's a '70 "E" engine, worth saving? Thanks! ![]() |

Unfortuately I have no idea how this happened. This is a garage find car, an early '66 911 with this (non-matching) '70 "E" engine. I'm trying to figure out if this engine is worth saving...I'm thinking it is but looking to understand the best method.
For the welding...any recommedations on someone who can do this correctly? |

Toss it. Since it's not original it's not worth fixing

welder
a very good tig welder who knows magnesium should be able to do this weld.
it will need to be taken apart. check out some videos on welding tips and tricks or mr. tig to get an idea how they weld magnesium.

If it was to be welded and you were able to trust that it was structurally sound it would still need to be machined because it is in no way shape or form going to be a straight crankcase. That is kind of an important detail.
In other words: Toss and replace with good.

Out of curiosity what is the engine#? Ollie's in Havasu City might be able to fix it. They weld repair aluminum Porsche cases anyway. I would guess $1500-$2500 by the time they remachine it so likely not worth it as discussed. You can call and get a ballpark number.

I think it was caused by crank flex.

Could also see this happening from catching the sump plate on something immovable while the vehicle is in motion.

Unfortunately, this may be true. More and more marginal starting points will become the norm as these engines get older.
BTW, Ollies can indeed weld Mg. They stitched some Mg welds on my case presumably over potential thin spots near #3 piston head studs: ![]() ![]()
