Rich's Luggage Deposit Project

Mike's "Luggage Deposit" thread on the ESR site has inspired me to build my own. Mine will NOT be anywhere as cool as Mike's as; (a) I'm basically a cheapskate, (b) I'm not the craftsman Mike is, and (c) I want mine to look like it was built in 1967, which is the first year they were available.

From the pictures I've seen of the originals, Porsche didn't put a whole lot of time or effort into the design or execution of these. They're basically two pieces of braced plywood with a couple of doors covered in vinyl & carpet. They're held into the car with two 'L' brackets that bolt to the outboard rear seat bolt holes. Sounds pretty simple.

This morning I spent $46 on a sheet of 1/2" plywood, hinges, and some spray-on contact cement. The only other things I need are locking latches for the doors. I've got some domestic cut pile carpet that won't perfectly match the cheapo domestic loop in my car, but...oh well. I've also got black vinyl that it is a pretty close match to the 44yo original.

Work starts tomorrow.

Supplies...if I don't screw up, I may enough for 3 of these.

My interior on the exterior. Now's a good time to swap the driver & passenger seat to even out the wear.

Clean slate...yes, the roll bar is going to be an issue. Issues are what make projects like this fun though.

And finally, my reference material. If anyone has any pictures of originals, feel free to post them.

Thanks Chris. I do...got any pictures of top, sans carpet? I'd like to see how you did the roll bar cut outs.

Hey Rich, what type of carpet is that in your car? I have jusr purchased what appears to be identical carpet (used but in GREAT condition) but need some extra for a custom touch.

Just reread your post and see you have domestic loop (cheapo I might add ;-) ). Any idea where yours came from? I would like to order as close to possible a match as I can.

Thanks

nineball, that really turned out nice.

Unfortunately, my project has taken an ugly turn. I've been offered an original "beater" luggage deposit to deconstruct for a pattern...which, of course, I'm going to do. So now that I have access to a real one, I've decided to make mine as close to original as possible (for me).

The non-matching, non-bound carpet is out. The hardware store hinges are out. Original looking leather pulls are in. Black push-buttons are in.

More to come...

I remember when our kids fit in the back seat of our '66 912. They're 25 & 27 now.

I'm not sure how helpful these are because they're from an RS America.

I've always liked the shape of the front. I know they're not like the earlier version but at least the top looks similar to the one your building.

I'm looking forward to seeing your finished product.

These are things that the aftermarket should build. Just wood and upholstery. The few pieces of hardware appear easy to replicate. I’ll speculate that the burdened manufacturing cost would be far less than 1% of Porsche’s retail, if you could get one.

OK, Wayne, Scott … get some vendor busy.
I’ll buy two.

Best,
Grady

it would be really easy to just build something to replace the lower seats and fill out the pan. i have been debating making a few more like mine (without speakers) after some people enquired about them.

Scott, I'll give you a shout when things get rolling.

Edit: I just thought of something...you ARE the seat guy. You probably know stuff about upholstery. I'll definitely be calling.

Rich,
That is a good project. It turns the rear seat area into something useful and....to my eyes, far more aesthetically pleasing. I had a really nice 964 RSA Rear Seat Delete unit that was so nice, I couldn't bring myself to mod it to fit my 77. I ended up selling it eventually and replaced it with a hand built unit that I bought from Chris Nielson (small world). I recovered it and used it for quite a while. It resides on the very top shelf of my garage these days, but I will get back to it ....some day.

Good luck on the project...keep the pix coming.

Al
