THanks efrain. Damned if I didn't just let my subsription lapse. Jack, V.L. usually publishes larger events a month or three behind... So no, the motor is still bagged and tagged in the basement...

If it's from Road America Elkhart Lake Vintage Fest,
that would be the race that "justified" our engine rebuild ![]() Group 6 (V8s and others) is just awesome to watch! You can FEEL them coming and going!!!!! |

You must have your hands full in Thunder Alley with all those V-8s! I ran in a Marchetti's event there some years ago and was amazed on how fast those big americun irons fly around that course (read- my doors got blown off!)
Nice car- will be good to hear your future on track exploits |

I was at the RA VSCDA event in September where that picture was taken, and I had to feel for you when I saw you you out there with the Class 6A and 6B big bore thumpers, the fastest of which were running 10 to 15 seconds a lap quicker. HP is king at Elkhart. ![]() Just curious, but why aren't there any more 6C cars for you to run with in that group? As I recall, you were the only one in the class? Tim |

Class A Production Based Cars over 5 Liters Class B Production Based Cars 3 to 5 Liters Class C Production Based Cars 2.4 to 3 Liters Classes are grouped based on engine size.... as to why there were no other C Class cars... not sure. no 911s with 5l motors? ![]() run in group 6? ![]() costly if anything were to happen if a 911 and a big bore car "kissed" ? Wheel size restrictions on Group 6 cars limited to 15" - Try finding competition TIRES for 15x7 or 15x8 or 15x9 wheels!!! Nearly IMPOSSIBLE for 911s especially when the organization ruled against the use of Hoosiers We used to run in Group 8 with other 911s - that was fun Great dicing with a WOMAN driver - Lisa - awesome driver! I always look for her white 911 when watching Group 8 She's always part of the "lead pack" Group 8 was a lot of fun - Group 6 is a lot of fun in a different sort of way... great bunch of guys in both groups. There may be other reasons - maybe Chris will share his views/opinions.... |

Tim,
Well there just aren't as many GTO cars running with sub 3.0L displacements. Fact is, there just weren't many made and raced. 6C is more of a bump-up class from Group 8 where the cutoff is 2.5L. So any car above that is moved up. I wish there were more group 6C cars. THe cars that are most likely to be in there are the later Porsche's, but since the tire and wheel regulations have changed, many dropped out because the approved tires will not fit. Many of those tires are 26" or taller. In fact, unless something is done, I may not run with VSCDA (except for BRIC) this coming year. Most of the Porsches run in Grp 8 with 2.2 and 2.4L cars and do quite well, but I didn't want to build just another 2.4L grenade and have to go through those yearly rebuilds like many of them do. There are some exceptions in either group for specific models of cars, but none for mine. I like running in 6C pretty well, sort of a David and Goliath thing at Elkhart though. THe shorter tracks in the area level the playing field quite a bit. BUT, even with the long straights at RA, Overall I started 20th out of 26th and finished 15th out of 25. Just a matter of being a relentless late braker to some extent... and getting a really good exit speed. I can't run up to the big guys bumpers in the braking zone otherwise I lose my exit speeds. I found that if I back off a bit in the braking zone (somewhat earlier braking) and give myself some room, I get a better exit speed.

Thanks Chris. What's VSCDA's objection to the Hoosiers, especially given what appears to be a limited choice of other viable tire options?

Tim,
Good question really. My understanding was that Hoosiers for all intents and purposes are a slick. THey only limit the radials and require that any tire used in a production or modified production class have a full width molded tread. Part of their justification is to keep people from going to overboard with power modifications and trying to keep the groups competetive without having to result to serious scrutineering. If you limit the runner a car has on the ground, you effectively limit useable horsepower and massive aftermarket brake systems... Its a smart solution to a complicated problem, but there are always a few cars that fall through the cracks with blanket rules.
