Steering Wheel - Why did you go back to stock?
I recently bought a new momo steering wheel for my car because I like the feel of the wheel in my daily driver more than the feel of my 911 wheel. This new momo wheel has that same feel. So far, I'm really satisfied. That said, over the past several years, I browse the 911 classifieds pretty regularly and have noted that lots of drivers sell their aftermarket wheels, with the note that they are going back to stock.
So, outside of the obvious answer that you want your car to be in a perfectly stock condition, the question I had for you that have done it: Why did you decide to go back to stock? cw

Though I haven't gone back to stock nor do I have plans to, those who I know that have swapped back to stock did so for the following reason(s):
1) Go back to stock configuration as you mentioned given the authentic market these days 2) Better view of their instruments as a result of smaller diameter aftermarket wheel. 3) Better low speed steering leverage with large wheel/tire upgrade, also related to smaller diameter aftermarket wheel. |

Momo
I actually found low-speed steering easier with my Momo. It's counter-intuitive because of the lower amount of leverage, but I think it's because the Momo is slightly "meatier".
Who knows? |

I prefer the stock steering wheel on my factory turbo look for the obvious reason that it's tough to steer in low speed parallel park situations.
That said, one of the cars only options is the turbo steering wheel which is smaller diameter but fatter. I'm going to install a standard later Carrera wheel, while its not as pretty I really like the way it feels. I put the stock one on the shelf for originality later if I needed. I tried Momo in narrow bodied coupe that I once owned and instantly disliked the small diameter And the fact that it blocked the instruments. FWIW Scott

I received a Momo Prototipo as a gift. I held it up in the car and decided I just like the style of the stock wheel better. The Momo was also a little smaller which would obscure the gauges. Also my interior is a greenish gray color and the solid black Momo just looked out of place to me.
Pretty much all cosmetic reasons only.

I like my Momo wheel for driving spirited...I have three different stock wheels that I will swap in when I go to events or shows (Signature Edition wheel, 4 spoke all black, and 3 spoke Sport wheel)

Most aftermarket wheels are 350mm in diameter and after using a few i realized that size just has too many compromises for me. I found an aftermarket wheel i liked in 370mm and that fixed most of the issues that bothered me with the smaller 350mm wheel. I am very pleased now.

Thanks all for the replies. I guess it just really comes down to the feel of the wheel and instrument visibility... Good information to have for those considering. Mine is 350 mm and I haven't been bothered by the items noted yet...but only time will tell I guess. I do have the stock wrapped up on the shelf in the event I feel the need to swap back out later.
Thanks again, cw

I got a 380mm race style suede wheel. Best of both worlds.

I put a 350mm Momo wheel on 25 years ago.
Just loved the feel of it. Took it off a couple of years ago and replaced it with the stock wheel to improve low speed manoeuvrability. In spite of what others say, my arms and the laws of physics, but most importantly, my wife, tell me a larger diameter wheel provides better leverage.

I started with a stock wheel, went to a 350mm Ickx Momo, found it was too small for all the aforementioned reasons and then found a 380mm Momo Monte Carlo on eBay. Haven't installed it yet tho.

I originally went back to a stock wheel because my smaller diameter 930 wheel made it hare to see the speedometer and the steering wheel felt "twitchy".
However, since then, I have completely replaced all of my suspension components and I now believe that my twitchy steering was a result of bad bushings, etc.. I wish I had kept the 930 wheel. |

almost done returning my 85 targa to stock after retiring from DE. had to re-stitch the wheel leather first.
![]() no plans to sell, but with the build of the 78 930 in process and a modified 951 as my current DE/street, want to return the 85 targa as close to stock as I can. I like the feel of the Momo I used when the car was used for DE, along with the quick disconnect it moved the wheel closer to me. it along with the EVO2, cage, etc are going in the 78 930 I am in the process of building. have a momo on my current 951 DE car.

Using stock wheel because in the event of a collision I don't want my nose to look like Peyton Mannings.

I really like my Momo. The only downside it it does cover the speedometer.
![]() I have always liked a thick wheel best. That's the most obvious plus for me. The other nice thing is with a leather wheel you can use the old water trick. If you're running track days of an autocross soak the palms of you gloves with water. The grip will be much improved. Richard Newton Brake Pad Selection |
