Porsche Crest Hey Wayne - 101 Projects is GREAT, but what about the ENGINE REBUILDING BOOK?

A lot of people have asked me for sneak previews and details about the 911 Engine Rebuild Book. Let me start by saying it's going to be the same caliber as "101 Projects for Your Porsche 911" but with even more detail!

The book will cover:

- Brief history of 911 Motor (not really covering what is already out there in about 5-7 books currently published)

- Dropping your engine (expanding upon the chapter in "101 Projects for Your Porsche 911"

- Engine Teardown. What to do, what to look for, and how to do it.

- Machine Shop and Refurbishment. What happens at the machine shop? What can you do to make it better?

- Reassembly. Step-by-step on the whole process including the 1001 things NOT mentioned in any book or factory manual

- Break-in. You've got your motor assembled, now it's time to get it used to its new environment

- Performance Upgrades. This is the chapter that everyone has been waiting for. Without going overboard (I'm not going to how-to the supercharger, install) here is the chapter that will go over all the 1965-89 motors, and list out what you can do to get more HP, and at what penalty (fuel consumption, engine life, etc.). I'll cover overviews of dual-plug conversions, and other neat things like Eletromotive conversions, etc.

- Appendix A: Parts interchange and reference. Kind of like the reference book with the blue 911 on the cover, but in more depth, and also covering the 1965-73 models.

- Appendix B: Tech Specs. Can't find the little tech specs books anymore (they've been out of print by Porsche for quite some time now). Never fear, all the specs that you need to rebuild your motor will be here...

My suggestion will be very simple. Get it out as soon as we need it! (Smiles)

Someone who wants to go from a 2.2T to a 2.2E, simply.....

Keep up the good work Wayne. This is what keep us (me at least) at Pelican.

My only suggestion at this point is a question about format and eliminating the 3-5 month delay at the prnting company ... why not publish it in PDF format on a CD-ROM? Probably 80% of the people out there can already read PDF files and print them, and for any that don't have the Adobe reader, it could be included free on the CD, just as it is on many magazine 'freebee' CDs.

The only problem would be those without computers, and you could always print copies and put it in a binder, loose-leaf format like Mr. Pellow did with the early 'Maestro' books!

Warren.
A sad fact with your suggestion can be damaged Royalties due people copying the CD, and distributing and selling it - would need some form of copy-protection.
Sounds a great idea, Wayne.

Hello Wayne,

1) It would also be great if you can make a video to go with the book. Afterall, a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine what a motion picture of the whole process is worth?.

2)Please include a list of qualify mechanic shops and suppliers of the engine rebuilding items in both east coast and west coast areas.

Just some suggestion. Thanks you and god bless.

Wayne,

All I have to say is....WHEN??? I will try to have the 101 projects done before the rebuild book gets to market, but give us a time frame.

I really would like to try a rebuild like Leland did, I can follow directions and am pretty handy, but the only thing that stops me is experience. If a book could include the do's and don'ts I think I would plunge right in.

Are we talking a year, six months or what?

I agree with Andrew. Wayne! How about a video/DVD instead or in addition to the book? Much easier to follow along!

I'm talking with the $$$ people about the waterpumpers. Trouble is, they're not convinced that there is a big enough market. In some respects, they're right (not as many cars as 911s). In other aspects, they're wrong (there's nothing out there for these cars right now...)

Gosh, a video would be nice, but I don't have the time, money or equipment to undertake such a project. I have long considered adding 'video tech articles' to the website, but determined that the value added was minimal to the written word.

This engine book should be completed and sent to the publisher around February. It takes 6-10 months to get the finished product completed from that point. Let's hope for Christmas 2002!

How about info on engine swaps and solutions relating to such? (and the phone number to that secret brazilian factory that sells brand new 3.0L/915 combos for next to nothing)

Can't wait for the 101 projects to arrive, been almost a week..

There is a use for the PDF format via Acrobat Reader; error pages (errata). These ought to be kept posted at Pelican as any errors crop up in the printed matter. I wish Bentley would do this...

Wayne, I look forward to this next book!
I'm especially interested in the details not included in other manuals, etc.

Thumbs up

Wayne..........
I have to hand it to you buddy. Once upon a time when VW's ruled the roads in the 60's a masterful book came out titled, "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive". A simple easy to follow step by step guide on maintenance for the enduring Beetle. Without it my dear old bug would never have survived during my college days. It was like the modern day, "Juggling for the Complete Dummy".

Well finally after ordering and reviewing your 101 Projects and putting it to good use (yes I got it dirty and bend back the pages), I commend you on providing an opportunity to open up for the world 911 ownership without the high labor expenses. You just made the Porsche 911 affordable, Wayne!! If I can follow it and do brakes, mounts, valves, belts, etc., with average mechanical aptitude then everyone else out there can as well. So, you have wisely captured your target audience well and the result has been renewed confidence, re-dedication and it left plenti-o-money in my wallet too. Thank you for a most useful and excellent guide.
