Bigger "SSI" system
This year at the oldtimer grand prix Eisenmann showed some 42mm heat exchangers.
Don't know if this is news, but at least I didn't know they existed. They looked really nice, the secondaries was a bit larger too. Eisenmann GmbH - Heat Exchanger 3,0l - 228 kW (310 PS) They have the standard 38mm also.

Actually, if you back out the 19% VAT, it's more like $1,710 (at today's exchange) + ship. Notta bad deal, IMO.
Has anyone used their stuff to comment on quality?

Somewhere along the way in my reading up on the "SSI" replacement/backdating heat exchangers was some commentary about the different grades of stainless used in different parts by various manufacturers. Now that I think about it - and with a few more sips of coffee - it was/is right here on Pelican:
Porsche 911 (1974-1989) - Heat Exchangers and Hoses - Page 1 Anyone familiar with how these Eisenmann heat exchangers stack up on that question? |

The mythical 1.5" ID SSIs ... comes up every two years or so, always get debunked. Need to verify the specs. See below:
3.2 SSI internal diameter of primaries? Would love to hear its true, but probably not.

John (owner of SSI) never made a 1.63"OD version of his exchangers. It would require complete retooling and a different size tubing. He bought stock in 12+ month supplies which allowed him to keep the prices dirt cheap. I visited his shop several times when he was looking to sell and we talked about expanding to the larger size for the Carrera market. Wasn't going to happen. I've looked at it many times myself and IMO the price point would be too high for the current market if keeping the quality at the same level that John did. Everything now is cheap Asian stainless and outsourced junk. SSI is no longer the company it used to be, which is very unfortunate.

The eisenmann website shows two different part numbers, one ending in "38", the other in "42". One is more expensive than the other.

In response to my inquiry, they replied,
"Much to our regret we must inform you, that this info is not correct. Eisenmann Exhaust Systems GmbH/Germany is not producing/offering Heat Exchangers for the 84-89 Porsche models." That link by the OP is for the 911SC (F Model), where I was hoping for a product for the 3.2 Carreras with the larger tubes. |

The 42 mm he is for a modified 3.0, but they will (to my best guess) fit a 3.2 also. The difference is in the long exhaust studs for the 3.2 thick flanges. So the studs needs to be replaced. Along with muffler and oilpipes etc...

The oil lines would need to be swapped anyway so that isn't a consideration.

Had confirmation today the 42mm OD are 39mm ID.
Why would longer studs need replacing? |
