'02 3.6 ticking sound
The car has been sitting for two weeks and it's cold here. I started it this morning and I hear a ticking sound from the lower right, valve, spark plug area. It sounds just like a lose valve adjustment (but not this engine year?) or lose spark plug. Speeds up with engine speed. I'm in a time crunch and just needed some ideas so I don't waste time.

Possibly loose exhaust/exhaust manifold/H.E.s too.
To confirm it is not tapping, use a long screw driver and put it to you ear and suspect area. HF stethescope would be better. Go buy a cheapo cigar and blow smoke around the area look for air disturbance. My 2 cents,

I believe the problem is solved. I did the screw driver trick and could not pinpoint anything. It was near the front of the engine so I pulled the coil and plug and seamed OK. Put it back together and went for a short drive and I don't hear it anymore. I think Bill may have gotten it. A lifter that needed to get pumped up which maybe the reason I could not hear with the screw driver (it's deeper inside?).
Thanks for the responses. I sold the car and the guy will pick it up tomorrow and I want it to be perfect with no issues. |

Yeah, I've had sticking lifters in my old 996.
Give it an Italian tuneup. |
