How do you get these 40 year old plugs so snap back in?

Vasoline or dielectric grease if you don't want to get yuk in the plugs. Horrible design.

I like to use glycerin. Available at your local drug store. It has the added benefit of adding some flexibility back to the old rubber and it will evaporate completely over time.

Clean, lube, get it warm, press really hard and twist. Often a small dull flat blade is needed on the other side of the hole to get the lip to start going over the edge and start sealing in.

In my experience with rubber and silicone, petroleum (vasoline) should not be used on rubber/edpm or viton parts such as this example. As alternative I would use pure (food grade) silicone grease, or dupont christolube (tho, $$) which is good on dynamic seals. Making sure the lubricant is appropriate for the use environment (heat, etc).

I am sure others have alternatives, though 'Krytox' would not recommended for heat sensitive areas, if it burns it can be toxic.
