Time to Spice up the Exhuast, Need Help!

I've got an '87 Carrera with stock 1-in-1-out muffler but also a widebody kit.

The car is great and very sporty looking but doesn't have as much bark to what looks like it's bite on the stock setup. Would like to turn this thing up to 11.

Something like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxBIsOHMGno

Would like to hear some suggestions on the best aftermarket setup you think is the best for having a more aggressive sound coming out the ass end. My lower left valence is cut out for current stock muffler but I'm open to cutting the other side for dual exhaust or modifing for center/GT3 style.

I'm aware I would not likely get to Rally Group 4 level carnage but need something between stock and neighbors calling the Police. Open to suggestions. Also, if you have something that you're getting rid of that might help would appreciate the look.

Thanks!

Very happy with the sound from M&K euro pre-muffler and M&K single in / out muffler on my '88. I used to run it with a test pipe, but it was a little too loud. The pre-muffler helped take the edge off. Zero drone on the highway. It will also account for a significant weight savings.

Keep in mind, those cars in the video probably have very high performance, high compression race motors..The type of induction also plays a roll in your overall note, be it carbs, efi, cis, itb, etc..

Those cars in that video I would say are way beyond the neighbors calling the police.

I would suggest going to your local track for a DE or race weekend and finding cars that are like Carrera that you think you want your car to sound like and talking with the owners.

My exhaust was set up just like yours, FabSpeed pre-muffler and Bursch muffler. When I did my updates, I went with SSI heat exchangers and M&K 2 in 1 out. I REALLY wanted a set of Brian's (Rarlyl8) headers but not having very much heat was not very appealing to me and the SSIs gave me factory heat. The bonus was I have more power and ridiculous sound.

I went with a Fabspeed cat bypass and a modified 1 in 2 out and debaffled stock muffler. I really like it - more ggressive, but still sounds like a 911, to me.

Check out a drive-by and in cab video:

https://youtu.be/a5GtHQUdHIU

I briefly went with the cat bypass and the Fabspeed muffler bypass. I found myself blipping the throttle constantly, but also very conscious of just how early was too early to pull her out of the garage for fear of irritating my neighbor. I still have it, and can swap to it in about 20 minutes when I get the urge.

If I can find a video, I'll post that one too.

Also love my M & K 1 in 1 out. Great sound but not too loud. Plugged in a cat bypass and removed it within 2 weeks as it just made my SC way too loud for me and my neighbors.

M&K is great stuff, well-made and lightweight.

I'm running a Dansk 2-1 on my SC now though as the M&K was a bit loud for my taste. It sounds like it would be perfect for you though! My neighbor, a hot rod guy, loved it!

Not being helpful but exhaust preference is very individual. Some have a high tolerance for extreme loudness and even wear ear plugs. Some step it down a bit but their ears ring after a drive meaning they are exceeding 100dB which can be detrimental long term. Some have loud exhausts which drone at speed and they eventually switch to something less wearing. Others have something in between boy racer/track loud and sporty. I would suggest getting together with other pelicans near you to hear and ride along with them to get a first hand impression as well as the owner's.

With that said, I positively love my Dansk Sport 2 in 1 out. At WOT, it has a nice bark, and at cruising speed the sound is just gorgeous. While cruising I can easily hold a conversation without raising my voice much which may or may not be your thing. So go listen to and experience others first hand rather than taking a poll and possibly spending a bunch on something you might regret.

I love the Bursch on my 1973 Carrera. 2 small glass packs into one bigger glasspack.....wonderful sound, and this system has been on there for at least 10 years.

They make a special system for MFI that works really well.

Also made in USA by a Porsche guy. Sold by Pelican

I made my own. It' modeled after European rally systems. It cost me about $30.00.

What you want and what you think you want may not necessarily be the same thing and a great sounding exhaust gets old if it's something everyone complains about... even worse when there's drone. If you stick to one out there's essentially no drone.

Read a lot here and then try to follow the opinion of someone you trust. Sound is subjective and note how many people have upgraded their exhaust only to re-do it again or change a component of it. Then there's the look aspect and to some (like me) it's just as important as the sound.

A lot of quality stuff out there, M&K stuff is light, beautiful and supremely well made, the Dansk Sport is another example of what a lot of people go for. There's also a matter of performance and not matching the right exhaust to a stock 3.2 engine can really move the torque range so educate yourself before buying and then don't be surprised if you change your mind after your purchase.

+1 on Dansk Sport Muffler, I did not expect much from the OEM but she sure sounds great on the freeway at full throttle Not too loud around town but she does set off some car alarms from time to time.

Draco, can you clarify when you say you did not expect much from the OEM? The OEM muffler or Cat? or do you mean OEM Cat with Dansk? Thanks

Wow, thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. I'm gonna read through this a little more and post some more questions. I think I have a video of a takeoff I can post with my current setup as well.

First question: If I have 1 in/1 out is that what I'm stuck with or can I go to 2 in/2 out, etc?

Here's a video of my current stock setup. Just not much bark to it.

So sorry, like the OEM muffler. I do have the OEM Euro Cat By-Pass installed as well, but I was pleasantly surprised at the sound of the New Dansk Muffler.

OMG, what the heck is wrong with that? Classic 911 sound, If you want it beefier,/bassier consider a cat-by pass. I would not touch it.

BTW, love that M491 body and rocker, damn gorgeous.

Ha, well I appreciate the compliments. The body kit is aftermarket that next to last previous owner put on it. I love it.

I wasn't really getting on it in the video but just want something a bit more throaty and shouty to match the looks.

There was a guy with a beautiful 2.7 at my local Cars and Coffee that had the twin center pipes and it sounded just amazing. Between that and the Supercup race I went to at COTA this year I need moar sound!
