Mich Leland Bushing Question

I've been trying to install the Leland bushing on my 81 today. However it's seems my factory bushing is intact. I can't see anyway to get this out without taking a hammer and punch to it, which I don't want to do. Is is an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" situation?

My motivation for doing this to begin with was some minor play in the steering.

Haven't done this job yet, but was looking at this thread

And is the yellow stuff between the metal part and the shaft the remnants of your old bushing? I think that has to be scraped out so the new bushing can go in there. The thin area of the ML bushing slides into that space.

Oh and assume you know about these:

Are you certain that the play is in the Steering Shaft rather than the Steering Column itself. If the play is in the Column, changing the bushing will NOT cure the problem. If the play is in the Column, simply remove the Tachometer and tighten the 2 column mounting bolts behind the dash at the bottom of the Tachometer cutout.

It seems that everyones reaction to Steering Column movement is that the bushing is the culprit, I fell for it also only to find that when I went to replace the bushing that it was fine, the movement was in the Column; I'll be happy to sell you my unused bushing for $20 plus $7 for 2 day domestic shipping.

Thanks for trying to help, but I've seen most of the old threads on this. Everyone else's factory bushing seems to have desintegrated making it easy to remove the pieces. My factory bushing appears to be made of metal and is intact. Can't see how to remove it.

Thanks. I'll check the column mounting bolts. I already have a bushing.

I bolded the above to point at what i'm thinking. I suspect the bushing that you have in there is the previously well intentioned "928 sleeve fix"

Steering wheel moves up and down

I think years later people have started to find the 928 sleeve can cut into the steering shaft and you end up with a problem similar to the original plastic sleeve

Mitch's bushing is one example of " if it ain't broke, replace it anyway.
Original bushings are getting old, replacing them is cheap and easy.
It is sorta like pre-emptive maintenance.
I'm happy with mine.
Would recommend!...


Contact mitch and get your issue fixed.
Do it.

Yup. Looks like the 928 fix. I believe the only way to remove it is to push the shaft out which must be done from the trunk after taking out the circlip on the shaft at the lower bearing. This would be lots of work. I just did it but have a completely stripped tub, so it was easy. Good luck.

Why would you want to remove the 928 fix?
Does that splined shaft move like this?
If not, the problem lies elsewhere.

Thanks guys. I think I do indeed have "the 928 fix".
I think I will leave well enough alone for now.
