Where did you get the cooler? Most coolers have the fins facing front to back for air flow. From you pics it looks like you intend to do it sideways? What happened to the stock cooler that was in there?

Removed the last one.
I am doing a 3.6 conversion, the original cooler wasnt enough for my conversion. I live in a place that hits triple digits during the summer. I am adding this cooler and one front mounted cooler.

OK, what "I" did was keep the Carrera oil cooler and added an additional cooler in the nose. BUT I have a backdated ride that has the air dam in front. You may choose not to do it as I did but that's your choice. There are few threads on oil coolers in the nose that used a stock SC bumper. It involved fabricating a box inside the frunk. Ingo Schmitz did that. He documented on the PP website. You can also PM for pics.
I found I needed both coolers. When I movied down to LA, I added a fan to the wheel well cooler due to traffic when oil temps creeped up. BTW, the fan when not in operation reduces cooling capacity as it blocks air flow.

I'm not confident the 964 cooler will do better than the 3.2 cooler when mounted sideways. Street car? Track car?
I have a stock cooler and a center cooler with my 3.6, with a '74 RSR nose. It never goes above temp. |

911 ![]() 964 ![]() 993 ![]() 964/993 have a built in half duct formed by the trunk walls, this is missing on a 911 so the air doesn't get ducted efficiently through the coolers. Also the 964/993 have a system of gaskets and seals the force the air to go through the cooler. The cooler itself is much bigger than a 911 cooler and so need to be sidemounted. If it were my car I'd give up on the 964 cooler and if not using a center intake mount dual fender mounted late Carrera coolers, Elephant has a nice kit to do this. Or do what I did on my 911. Use a stock passenger side cooler and a front valance mounted cooler.

Not sure about your cooler installation for a 3.6 conversion ... i kept the original 3.2 cooler and installed a Patrick Motorsports front cooler with a big ass opening on the front bumper , although i did install an Iroc bumper for that purpose !

You have a beautiful widebody 911 - great job so far . . .
3.6L oil cooling - Bill V is definitely the man with the most experience and good advice on these cars. We thought about doing the 964 cooler - but decided after some trial and error to use 3 front coolers = Carrera fender coolers in both sides and a front cooler that had already been plumbed and body curved behind the cooler. We also have the IROC front bumper/splitter and because it is a race car holes in the headlight buckets . We have raced in some warm temps but not "hot" - last weekend it was 90 air temp and my son had to short shift (from 7K to 6K) later in the race to cool down from 250 back to 210. You can see some of our work in my "garage" info . . . Wish you the best on your build. Regards,

If you insist
964/993 use a shelf that the coolers would be hung on stock right side, stock oil cooler Plumbing ![]() ![]() ![]() stock left side, stock AC condenser, the condenser is either removed and the second cooler takes it's place or the second cooler is mounted w/ it. ![]() ![]() Here's the second cooler mounted out side the stock AC condenser( the condenser has since been removed) stock fans are retained on both sides ![]() There are 2 different Setrab coolers that can be used on the left side 1)A second stock cooler 2) A motor sports cooler as seen above, the Motorsports cooler has ports in the front rather than the side, it makes plumbing easier. I forget the Setrab part #(maybe #640) for the cooler itself the Motorsport parts are used to shroud & mount it. Stock cooler w/ top ports ![]() Plumbing ![]() ![]()

Roy,
I am looking for a source for the cooler you mentioned, the curved center one. I have a 3.8l engine in my 87 and it runs good on the street with two 3.2l oil coolers. I am however a little worried for the first hot days on a track. Can you share the source please? |

210deg. I don't track though. Been running like that since 1992 and still runs like perfection!
