Fuchs look just fine to me, congrats on a great looking project:)

What about 964 welting on a regular Carrera bumper? I have a modified Carrera bumper (oem) Is there anything preventing that instead of using the full on Carrera smile? (Lots of black rubber....)

Scott,
I just got off the phone with Peter and my front and rear bumpers should be here next week. I do like the idea of how you mounted your lights. I wonder if my local law enforcement will like it as well. Would you mind sharing some experience with the Rennspd bumpers & mounting? Peter basically said to just mount the front using screws across the top of the bumper to the body. The 964 welting looks good. I have seen some mounted without any welting, do you think this fits snug enough to pull that off or do you recommend some type of welting? My poor car '78 is going to end up being one customized POS. YB bumpers, c2 rockers, and a '70s Carrera tail. I guess we will see how it turns out... |

What Peter said re: bumper mounting is correct. When you remove the front bumper and '78 smile you'll be left with a holes with speed clips left from the smile on the bottom of the front fenders. I reused these holed to mount my front Ruf bumper. Also in the front trunk there will be holes which I also reused. It's really self explanatory once you start removing the stock front bumper and smile. There are alternate methods: -Make nerf bars using the stock bumper tubes and fab up some custom mounts to the nerf bars. This way you could avoid attaching the bumper to the fenders. -Get OEM 964 bumper 'guts'. You could get these 'guts' to add some crash protection. My front bumper mounts better with the 964 smile. I have 930 welting which I tried but I wasn't satisfied with the fitment. The 964 smile simply makes the bumper fit the fenders better. Plus I just liked the look with the 964 smile better than without. Without the smile the top of the front Ruf bumper is LARGE! Mounting the rear bumper is similar to mounting the front. Remove the rear OEM parts. You'll be left with speed clips in the rear fenders. Use these holes along with the fender extension brackets to mount the rear bumper. None of the install is extremely hard - just time consuming. Good luck with the install. Make sure to post pics! |
One question I forgot to ask was a heat shield for the muffler. I am currently running a Magaflow dual in dual out and was concerned about the heat and the fg bumper. Doing some research I ran across Thermo-Tec heat shield and it looks like something I might try.
I might try and figure out something for front as far as crash protection. Peter mentioned that I might be able to leave a stripped down rear bumper in place for max crash protection. Thanks for the reply. I'll post pics after the install. The car is in need of a paint job so the finish product will be after I get my 3 or 4 car garage. (one car stall leads to dents and scratches) |

I'm currently not running any heat shield for the muffler. The bumper did get hot when it was hot outside (been pretty cold here recently) but not unbearably hot. Really the worst time was after turning the car off and the bumper would heat soak from the muffler. I haven't burnt any paint or anything so I'm not sure I'm going to install a heat barrier. I do suggest mounting the bumpers without paint and running paintless getto-style for a few weeks. The sun (and your muffler) will cook aka cure the bumpers. You'll be able to smell the glass curing the first few times you drive the car. Just my $0.02. My SC is by no means a concours car...but...it is a bastard SC with Ruf bumpers! Are you going to do the install yourself? |
Oh yeah, I'll do the install myself. I am currently trying to fix the Carrera wing as it was cracked where it forms to the fg decklid.
I'll post pics, after all, I did not paint the car. However, knowing how to paint and looking at the PO's previous paint job makes me sick. He or she even painted the Fuch's to match, only it looks bad. You have a good suggestion of running them unpainted for a little bit. It'll give me time to find a 964 smile and get the rockers figured out. I think I'll get 2x2 foot of Thermo-Tec get that mounted before the paint goes on. I am still trying to figure out what to do with my muffler as it is still too loud. |
I think I got my 964 smile from Pelican. They're not very expensive new from our host.

I was wondering if I could see some rear end on this link. ;)
I am starting the long process of getting the car ready for the conversion. I am currently dissatisfied with my current exhaust setup and plan on heading back to the shop. I have an aftermarket exhaust (Magnaflow) that can be modified to exit anywhere in the rear. I was hoping to get some ideas from those of you who have gone with the Yellow Bird or 964 rear bumper caps. I was thinking of making the exhaust exit similar to the 964 instead of the Yellow Bird, which exits more toward the side. I do have dual exhaust and only plan to take the pipes down a couple of sizes; my exhaust is a little to “free flowing”. Any pics? Scott, you posted this one. Who has this car? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1136222263.jpg My car would probably look similar to this one: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1111196942.jpg This pic Bill loaded looks similar to what I’d like. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa....75_garage.JPG Is this a factory sport or an aftermarket? Not bad…. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...ainted%20A.jpg |
DOH, stupid lousy double post....

I think I posted these somwhere else as well, but I'll post 'em here again as it seems appropriate:
I put this ruf btr bumper on my 88 930 cab with a 964 smile. The smile fit so well without any cutting or trimming that I could have sworn it was built specifically for this mod. I'm also still trying to find a way to get a good solid one-piece rubber seal all away around the top of my rear bumper cap. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1164568770.gif http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1164568870.gif |

I'll add a couple of mine into the fray for comparisons sake, although it looks like this is the look that you are trying to avoid... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1164587223.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1164587269.jpg Ralph |

Exhaust outlets
Here is what I decided to go with. They are without tips, I will do that later when I decide how much these will drag the drive way. But you get the idea.
I went with a small pipe to reduce noise and it worked wonderfully. Sounds mean over 4.5k but under that it sounds more like a standard 911. They should exit between the heat holes in the bumper and where the curve starts. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166289281.jpg |
Question about mounting rear bumper
My question for everyone who has mounted the rear bumper (especially the Rennspeed) is, since the bumper is going to need to be "flexed" in order for a perfect fit, as the bumper seems to be a little wider than SC flares, which point would you recommend mounting first?
The point close to the tail light or the point close to the tire? Take look at the pics and you may see what I am referring too. If I put the bumper and match it close to the tire, the other side is off and the point near the tail light misses the mounting rise. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166289768.jpg If I match the body curve close to the mounting point near the tail light, then the bumper sticks out near the tire. It looks too long but it is an optical illusion, it just needs pushed in toward the body. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166289878.jpg I'd appreciate any comments on your experience when mounting the rear bumper. |
Stephen -
You're bringing back memories with your pics and questions! I have Rennspeed bumpers and had similar mounting issues. Yes it seems like the bumper is wider than SC flares. I wonder if it has something to do with Yellowbird having 1" wider flares than a SC?!! I used the method in your first pic. Line up the ends on both sides as best you can. Drill a mount hole near the bumper end and bolt it to the fender, also bolt up the fender extension mount on the bottom of both ends. Then try and go around the bumper figuring out where to make mounting holes. The stock fender extension gaskets help with figuring out where to place the mounting holes. You kind of have to split the differences on both sides to make it presentable. It took me a few tries to get it to look similar on both sides. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166293946.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166294106.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166294132.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166294166.jpg |
Now that I'm thinking about this some more:
- I did do the first pic method to get those front mounting points (1 and 2 in the pic below) taken care of. Then I undid those bolts and then made the mounting point below (labeled 3 in the pic). - When you screw in mounting point 3 it makes mount point 1 stick out past the fender. Simply flex the bumper back in and screw in mounting point 1 and 2. - So I think the steps I did are shown as 1 and 2, then 3, then back to 4 and 5 in the pic: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1166295170.jpg |
