Do you guys have any tips or suggestions for the actual grille cutting? Should I use a dremel, jig-saw, something else?
I used an air powered version of a Dremel, worked geat

You will need 2 grills to do the center and 2 fog light openings

Wavey 03-18-2006 07:54 AM

I used a Bosch reciprocal saw (jigsaw) to cut one in half. The plastic cuts like butter, got a perfect edge, looked factory.

Derick I followed you post on Rennlist regarding your build and I have a similar build going on now by John Truman in Ohio I will be sure to post my results, I am shooting for 500 rwhp at no more than 1 bar.

Shouldn't be that hard. I'm basically there at 1.1bar, which means you've just got to make about 20 to 30 more HP at 1.0 bar. A little more cam and a little more revs and you are there.

Of course you may want to consider that a little more boost is actually not as hard on the engine as RPMs.

SCHNELE 03-20-2006 05:47 AM

Derick, what cams did Stephen source for you? Also my tuner has a lot of faith in the 935 style ITBs versus the 3.2 carrera manifold. I am also going Motec instead of the Autronic for a number of reasons, namely the free data upgrades. My car is a street car so drivability is important, btw I plan on using GT2 cams. Your car looks awesome, just be careful with that kind of power in a convertible, I read somewhere you need to use your back seat, a matter roll bar without the diagonal bar will permit the use of the back seat.

964 bumper welting with Ruf front bumper?

Has anyone used 964 bumper welting instead of 930 welting when installing a Ruf front bumper? If so, please post pics!

Thanks,

Well Souk, you satisfied? You wanted the ultimate Ruf thread and you got it. I spent a many hours the last few days reading every post and the linked threads.

I am now a convert and will most likely be doing the same thing to my '79 SC next year... :D

Thanks much for keeping the links to the threads on your posts, very cool idea. I'd also like to meet you sometime and see your beast. Also like to pepper you with questions regarding my car and the conversion from steel to fiberglass. Do you come up to Road America for the race weekends?

Thanks again!

Eric

LOL! I love it! I have been thinking about a one day trip up to the club race at RA this fall, Sept. We could hook up there. Otherwise I should be at the Chicago-PCA RADE event next Memorial Day weekend.

Feel free to e-mail my, "souk at motomotions dot com"

That's a good idea, Scott! Looks like it should work. I'll keep and eye out for a used piece to try on my car.

Scott,

That's it, the deal is sealed! It's exactly the 'stock' reference that has been missing.

Kudos to you for perfecting the almost perfect. How was the install? Any hang-ups or adjustments necessary?

More photos and details would be appreciated. TIA.

Oh, and since I'm too lazy to look through all the posts (or too motivated to sit in front of the computer on a sunny Sunday), is that the BW Motorsport valence?

Chris,

I haven't actually finished the Ruf bumpers project. I still need to paint the rear bumper. This has been entirely a DIY project.

No hangups adding the 964 smile. My bumpers were sourced from Rennspeed. The rear installation was pretty easy but the front took some time.

This winter I'll be spending more time on the front - redoing the turn signal housing mounts, adding the lower lip, installing ducting for brakes and the oil cooler, and adding a lower front under tray.

Swapping stock bumpers for fiberglass bumpers is a lot of work to do nicely but in the end I think it's worth it. Looks, weight, added room for an oil cooler, etc.

Scott,

I have to chuckle every time I read your 'antique' plates. The shape seems ageless, and the connotations of that word have never fit comfortably.

Yours is a beautiful car, no doubt. The bumper paint (or lack thereof) takes nothing away.

Since I live on a gravel road, the urethane front valence from BW seems like a logical choice. I'll most likely use FG for the rear. All of this now depends on whether or not the 964 smile will work with another manufacturer... The only other real deviations from the Ruf styling will be the 993 mirrors and Getty 3.8 RS SC decklid/spoiler. The rain gutter shaving will have to wait until just before the body is ready for paint, but it's something I really want to do. Now if someone could replicate the Ruf Carrera +1" rear flares, the list would be complete.

God, I need new mirrors and H4s...

Great car. Thanks for taking some risks. It's worth it, clearly.

Chris

Very nice, Scott! The car looks great.

Thanks for the compliments. I'm really proud of the way the car is coming together....

I also live on a gravel road and (*knock on wood*) haven't had any issues with the glass front bumper. It seems pretty strong actually.

IIRC the Ruf urethane front valence mounts under the stock bumper. If this is the case I don't think you could use the 964 smile - you'd keep the stock SC/Carrera smile.

Eventually I'll replace my mirrors though I'll be using the 935 mirrors which I believe are the same mirrors that Ruf used on Yellowbird.

I don't think I'll go as far as shaving the rain gutters or widening the rear flares but who knows...

I've also been tempted to buy a set of Ruf Classic wheels but I haven't been able to pull the trigger simply because of the weight of the wheels. Well...that and the price. I may consider a set of 17" or 18" forged wheels but for now I'll continue using my 8x9x16 Fuchs.

Update 10/9/06:

Eight months after ordering and receiving my Ruf bumpers from Peter at Rennspeed I finally have them both painted and installed on my SC.

I added my own unique touches to this install - using a 964 front lip instead of 930 fender welting. Also I used Lite-N-Boltz for rear license plate lamps instead of the Toyota Corolla looking rear lamp housings. They work well enough:

I still need to fine tune the rear bumper fitment and clean up the front turn signal mounts...but...for now I'm done.

Kaefer,

looks great, and the C2 front seal is awesome. Did anyone ever find a solution to sealing the area under the rear tail lamps?

Thanks for posting

Not that I know of.

Now that I'm thinking about it though I could take an extra seal, cut the ends off, and use those ends to extend the seal ~4 inches on each end. Use some 3M glue and it should look fine.

That may work.

Very nice work, Scott. I like the license plate lights.
