Reading thru this time-capsule thread has been a joy. I haven't posted much on here, but have been lurking for the past 5 years. I found an 86 Targa in a barn a few years back, and have begun teardown. I've got very little background working on cars, but love a good challenge. As relates to RUF, a friend is one of the few RUF-certified mechanics in the US and has been working on the engine for me. I purchased CTR bumpers from MA Shaw this summer, but am looking for some guidance from the group before moving forward:
1. The front bumper from MA SHAW doesn't have the oil cooler vent cut out of the glass in the center. Is that normal? Seems like I'm going to do a lot of extra work to get that cut out. 2. Do I need nerf bars? Seems like some guys did it, others didn't. I can't find anyone online selling any... Is it best to weld some metal onto the shocks? (after moving shocks front to back, etc) 3. Seems like the 964 seal is what many guys went with on the front. Any tips/links if I want to go with a simple thin molding? 4. Did anyone use Rivnuts to attach their glass to the fenders, etc? Pic of the car in its current state. Lots of teardown so far... About time to build it up ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hey SDPADCT- Plenty. I've fallen down the slippery slope and have continued tearing it down quite a bit. Looking to get the suspension out this week and begin undercoating.

I'm struggling with a proper seal to use from the quarter panel down to the CTR rear bumper. The center seal reaches 2/3 of the way under the taillights. This seal doesn't reach all the way to the center seal:
911-503-185-01 (hack job photo attached for reference) What have other guys used for the quarter-panel-to-CTR-rear-bumper seal? ![]() |

Hi Guys,
Our Ruf BTR has just been finally completed after a 3 year, $Cdn100,000, Cosmetic Restoration and Mechanical Refurbishment. The eBay description is 4,500 words, and there is an 8 part Youtube video series and a 375 photo Flickr album on it. It maybe an eBay record for longest auction description.... Cheers, Lawrence Romanosky Calgary, Canada |

There's a body gasket/seal that Pelican sells by the yard. I *think* it's the seal that fits between the front fender and the cowl? Similar profile to the quarter panel gasket in your photo, and you can run one piece all the way under the taillight. Been a few years but that's what I'm remembering doing on mine.

The "welting" material that a lot of people have used for the bumpers is the rubber strip that fits between the base/bottom of the whale tail or turbo tea tray spoiler and the surface of the engine lid. It's much like the seal between the fender and cowl that Wavey mentioned except the spoiler seal comes in a longer continuous roll. I suspect the 930 spoiler seal is the best one to go with since it has the biggest base. That seal is part number 930.512.215.00 and the parts diagram calls it "piping"
This strip seal works good on the front bumper where you want it to be thin and hardly noticeable. But at the rear, that gap between the top of the bumper and the bottom of the light housing is pretty large. I don't think the spoiler seal is fat enough here? I recall some folks have bought simple weatherstripping material that is a "D" shape and it fits the gap well. Check out McMaster to see the seemingly endless options and then search the internet for your favorite source? https://www.mcmaster.com/#weatherstripping-gaskets/=1bddlpe (click on the "Edge Seals" category)

That's it KTL, thanks! That is what I used and I was able to get a good fit, but I think I may have tweaked the Ruf bumper up a bit, and the taillights very slightly? I remember clamping it all together, then drilling & bolting. But a fatter seal would likely be easier to get right.

The welting I used was from a .76-80 930 bumper
999 911 205 40 It comes in 5m rolls so 1 roll will be more than enough to do both front and rear bumpers
