Great work! I wouldn't mind seeing more detail of the external oil filler for the '73s if you have the opportunity...

MFX 07-23-2017 11:33 PM

Love the Aluminium duck tail. That is some fantastic work.

green_chile 08-03-2017 05:18 AM

Amazing all metal craftsmanship. That bumper is insane.

Sounds like you have a lot of background in other builds. Any photos you could post of finished projects?

Metal work for the aluminum front trunk lid center fill fuel tank and the tool we made to get the look we wanted.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1502246214.JPG

Loving the fabrication work. That is great. Can you post up more pics of the duck tail?

#1 metal work is complete, all the modified oil lines are complete. Worked on all the gaps today and welded up holes that aren't needed. Tomorrow it goes back on the rotisserie For a light media blast and then the epoxy primer. #2 is right behind it. First one is Gulf Blue with orange graphics, #2 is going to be Gemini Blue with Silver graphics and #3 is going to be Gelb Green with black graphics. No Fiberglass, No Vinyl Grahics!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1502844039.JPG

Flojo 08-16-2017 04:17 AM

wow!

just clear coat it after blasting... could be one of a kind mean look!

but OK, if paint, then here's my choices:
a) bahamayellow
b) sandbeige (looks awesome with blacked fuchs!!)
c) dolphingrey

the plus for all three: thei're a good (light) contrast colour for black fuchs, decals, etc. !

omgjon 08-22-2017 03:27 PM

Car #1 is at the paint shop getting white epoxy primer. #2 in the metal work process and #3 undercoat grinding. I picked the 3 colors which will be #328 Gulf Blue, #137Gelb Green and #330 Gemini Blue.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503444427.JPG

When I see the oil tank location for the 72 all exposed like that I think about the arguments that must have happened at Porsche in 72' when they decided to move it back behind the wheel. Its such a superior spot for the weight I bet there was some knock down drag out fights and not nice things said.

Edoyle 08-22-2017 05:24 PM

Quality of this build is surgical!

The engineer that had the idea back in '72 had to wait a few years for the satisfactory "you're right" when Porsche brought the tank forward once again on the 964-993 cars!

Your skills are amazing, this is a killer build and thanks for sharing it with us. I cannot wait to see the finished goods!

Then I wonder what they did to the engineer that said the oil tank should be in the frunk...

metalracer 08-22-2017 07:32 PM

While you're at it, you should think about extending the oil tank down for more capacity.

You may be right. My engine builder suggested I add an additional cooler which I did. This will add some capacity to the system..

Canada Kev 08-22-2017 08:28 PM

Fantastic example of what can be done with quality metal working craftsmanship. My hat is off to you for spending the time and money to do this.

As an opinion, I hope you don't paint those oil and fuel labels on, especially in that size. If you insist on the labels, maybe you might make your mask smaller and blast the text onto the actual caps. Or you could do a mirror polish text on the natural or matte cap finish.

Regarding the 1972 exterior oil fill, I always wondered how there could have been so much of an issue with people filling the tank with gas. The filler door had a release inside the car. One would think the owner would know to not put gas in there. Mind you, back in the early 70s, people probably didn't lock their doors all the time and if you were an idiot driver and drove up to the wrong side of the pump, the gas jockey would probably just assume that was the filler and open the door and pull the release. Regardless, I think it's a great idea to have the oil filler there and I know I'd not have an issue filling the wrong tank with gas...

omgjon 08-23-2017 08:35 AM

The fuel and oil would be very small and is going to be laser etched into the cap.

The first of 3 cars is ready to go to the paint shop. All the metal work is complete with hand fabricated steel front bumpers and rears, handmade aluminum ducktail, aluminum hood with cutout for center fill fuel tank and exterior oil filler with custom cap. the first car is gulf blue with orange graphics and wheels. The second car is not far behind. Lots of cool stuff going on these 3 buildshttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1504122351.JPG

Love your choice in paint. Great product.

omgjon 08-31-2017 04:53 PM

Tomorrow it goes on the trailer to the paint shop. We put some temporary lettering on the back so no one would get confused what it is..http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1504227221.JPG

Jonny042 09-05-2017 05:01 AM

I kinda missed the part where this went from 2 cars to 3, but nice work! And nice shop......

So are you selling off two of the cars when finished to pay for one? Or are you building them for different purposes?

omgjon 10-12-2017 03:53 PM

#2 is now ready for one more light blast and epoxy primer. It then goes to speedworks in Santee for paint. Brad had been doing all mt Ferrari Dinos for years so this will be a change of pace. #3 is very close to having all the metal work also. At some point I will sell 2 of them or 3 and make another! I've gotten a lot of interest due to the all metal and awesome motor.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1507852397.JPG

Curious if I would be able to commission a turbo width rear bumper from you? I'm in the process of dealing with an insurance claim, so now would be an ideal time for me to do so. I've currently got a '74 with steel turbo flares that i'd like to backdate.

Sorry I have my hands busy with my own builds!

omgjon 11-02-2017 01:08 PM

Just an update on the progress of these builds. I have 2 of the cars at the paint shop now, one is in the metal work phase and number 4 is getting stripped of all the undercoating so it can go for media blast in a week or so. I originally was going to do one, then two, then three and now I've started the fourth. There has been a lot of interest in them and I think a lot more interest as they move along. I'm hoping to sell three of them. Will have to find that niche that will pay up as they haven't been cheap to build!! I've chosen 3 0f the colors, the 4th is yet to be decided.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509656853.JPG

#1 is close to paint. Working on the design to mimic the iconic 917 Hippie car, Freeman Thomas is helping me with this and has done some rough sketches.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515892490.JPG

That is some thread cred.
I got up close and personal with your inspiration in Philly a few weeks ago. Best, John

#2 goes to the paint shop next week. This is my favorite one with the graphics adapted to this from the Porsche 917 "Hippie" car. Freeman Thomas is doing the design and you will see the master in action. It's really cool that Freeman liked this project enough to get involved! I could not of done this project without him.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1521745390.jpg
