Engine issues
Hey everyone,
Looking for some advice from you all! I have my engine in getting looked over and given a bit of love since I done think this engine has really ever had any. My mechanic was moving on doing the valve clearances but upon dropping the oil found some shavings and bits on top of the oil plate. Upon further inspection we found that the sprockets on the timing chain looks worn and a bit sad. My questions are.. -should I continue to dig deeper? -change the sprockets, fix the timing, then do the valves? Hi |

Unfortunately, I'd say your sprockets are more than a "bit worn."
That said, I would replace the sprockets and move on...If not, you're looking at a major bill, unless you're open to a complete rebuild. Maybe you get away with only replacing the timing components. Steve

replacing the timing components then maybe some re-building down the track is what I'm most interested in at this stage |

Seems like that tensioner had to go bad at some point for the teeth to look like they do. I'm a minimalist, I'd replace the sprockets and chain, check the tensioner, put new oil in and new filter on and run it. After a short time I'd drain the oil, pull the filter and have someone with a large pipe cutter cut it open and see if you have any metal. If no metal, new filter, oil and down the road.

There goes a couple thousand dollars of sprockets, tensioners, chains... if you don't fall down the slippery slope

The chains look worn, as evidenced by the amount of piston sticking out of the tensioner. So definitely replace the chains as well as the sprocket.
I would also check for wear on the sprocket arm's pivot.

Have your wrench make the decision on the timing components. Theis guy saved you plenty already with his diligence.
I say ramps, chains and brand new tensioner assemblies at a minimum. You need to re-time the cams anyways with the new chains so let him make the call on the sprockets. If on a budget you can just get those safety collars for the tensioners after parts refresh, especially if the engine is in time. This is a band-aid.

You can actually see where the idler sprocket has dug into the aluminum shown directly above the sprocket in the picture....no doubt thats where the teeth went

given the wear on the timing chain-related stuff, also worth asking how many miles on the engine, what oil consumption is like, etc. Would be no fun (and likely not $$$-effective) to only fix this if the engine's already also begging for a top end overhaul/etc.

Make sure you check chain alignment with the new pieces in place.

so, did the tensioner fail?
or was this probably due to a bad-oil-period? or is this a "regular" waer such as broken headstuds can appear?

Still here

I presume the car has been run for a while with all that in the sump.
Anything in the filter ? |

Haven't opened the filter yet, but the history on the car is that it had sat for about 15 or so years, there wasn't the fullest of tanks of oil found in it..the tank had loads of oil sludge/paste in the bottom of it which has now been flushed and cleaned. On top of the oil plate/sump we found the sprocket teeth.
Kms on the car was 205222 It seems the tensioner May of failed at some stage it has been run and driven a decent amount of times before the discovery |
