get a gun, kill the previous owner of the car and the replacement trans. You will feel better... that is what I would do. Or, rejoice. you went from newbie to a man with lots of problem solving experience in a real short time... You will never get the reaction from people driving a jap car as you will with your Porsche. especially a cool older one... I get comments at traffic lights all the time..

If there is any way to swing it you really should try to get the 7:31 in the car. It absolutely wakes the car up .....at the expense of revving higher on the interstate. One option run the 7:31 and 16 inch wheels for cruising and 15 inch wheels for more spirited stuff.

Figured Id update what happened in the end. I tore into the transmission and a few days after i took it out, it was back together and in the car. I had to wait for the gaskets and such from a Toronto supplier. Also took a while to find Swepco 201. I put it all together, and took a half hour drive, thinking "if it breaks now, I know it probably wasn't meant to be" and ever since it has been driving like silk. Well - 2nd gear is a bit baulky. but thats it.

I will continue updating my build thread here: 1974 Porsche 911 DIY Budget Build - Front Pan Rust Repair

Thanks everyone for the help and encouragement! The car is really wonderful.

Wow! From a "The sky is falling" disaster to a "Everything is coming up roses" success in less than a month!!

It is a seriously good road you have followed here. You know your car that much better and the transmission will never intimidate you again.

Now get out there and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Well done Jeffery. Try shifting 2nd above 3500rpm and closer to 4000. That should help that shift.

1st to 2nd shift on a 915 box is always balky, especially below 4k rpm. When it gets hot it gets smoother. Mine makes a gentle ka-kunk going into gear. No grinding, just a 2-step as it settles into 2nd.
Bravo to you on keeping your head in the game and figuring it out. Welcome to the club. These cars are expensive to get parts for, but beautifully elegant and logical once understood....

That does not sound right. Mine just goes into 2nd without skipping a beat.

He's made a further leap into "what turbo can I put on my car" over in the 930 forum. Good thing he's learned his way around the 915 gearbox...

Keep the 7:31 parts. When the dust settles, you can build the 74 Mag unit to keep your numbers. I had my 1973 7:31 rebuilt and ran it with a stock US 3.0 for "pleasure use". It was fun to go thru the gears. 74 is a good year so enjoy.
