So having been away for almost three weeks, it's great to be finally back home and in the US again. SmileWavy

I’ve managed the sum total of zero work on my car for the past few months due to work travel and personal travel commitments. (Europe three times, South America once and many US states since my last post). I’ve not even had time to strip down a front bumper and send it to another member on Pelican. However, Santa did deliver something nice for me when I recently got back from Dublin (day before Christmas) a nice new alloy engine lid! Thanks Santa! I knew all my hard work would pay off :D Has anyone ever fitted one to their car? Is there any issue with galvanic corrosion? Is there some special prep or insulation method I should use if I ever dare risk a trip out to the garage? It’s -10F here at the moment, I’m not sure the heater will keep up with the chill and the wind is howling!!!! Thanks for any advice! |
The shift knob is cool... did I miss what it was made of? Is that the final finish? BTW a drill press was on my list this year but no dice.

Aluminum deck lid? Is it primered? Aluminum needs specific primers, your paint supplier will know what to use.

The gearknob is stainless steel. It's still got a long way to go. Needs polishing. That said, the new deck lid is freakishly light in some form of aluminum. I'll grab some pics. It almost makes me want to go down the route of 'just how light can I make this car?'. If that's the case, there may be some part redesigns on the cards! I'm a bit worried about how to attach it and corrosion. I have been thinking about designing some alloy hinges and printing them... Thanks for the special primer comment. I'm kind of tempted to leave part of it metal and clear coated. |
I used RM EP569 Epoxy primer on mine. The TDS for the primer says it's good for aluminum, steel, fiberglass, etc. I would think most modern epoxy primers would stick adequately.

I've just come back from Ireland, visiting my parents.
One of the great things about going over there is the large library of different European magazines you can pick up - many of the titles being Porsche related. I picked up a current copy of 911 & Porsche World and fell in love with the cover car. As I sat and read the article, I realized that the company, Classic Carreras, that built the car was around 30 miles from where I was sitting! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514591948.JPG I dropped along with the hope of seeing a few nice cars in the parking lot and coming away again. When I arrived there was very little outside to see, but popping my head through the door, I met one of the metal working guys who works there. Unfortunately the green RSR inspired car is now off in England but... He was kind enough to give us (My son, uncle and I) a brief tour. What an amazing place and such talented guys! I now wish I could afford to ship my car there and get them to rebuild it. Their jig based welding and rebuilding of cars is the only way to go, and their use of lead on the 356 so far beyond my skill set, it's obscene! |

I'm struggling between signal orange and white. I think white may win the day. I don't want a car that shouts 'race me'. More one that can surprise a few people at how fast an old 'un can go when it hitches up its skirts. I'm staying narrow body too, so no other real indicators of any turn of speed. I decided to have a quick play and polish with one of my proto parts.
This is the gear knob. I sat and polished it while the in laws were around. Really I should have got some more aggressive paper from the garage, but it’s too cold out there!
