It fits over the windshield on a night when a frost is expected...
I can tell you are envious :D;):D

So having been away for almost three weeks, it's great to be finally back home and in the US again. SmileWavy

Some goodies have turned up:http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509832985.JPG

And now I am able to see what needs doing before I order the next, hopefully final versions. :p

Also I ordered something that has been on my tool wish list forever turned up:

I only have this weekend with the family, between now and Thanks Giving due to work travel, so I had to wait until late in the evening to creep out to the garage and put it together.

Unfortunately, the garage pixies haven't done anything with my pedal box while I've been away and frankly with only this weekend with the family for yet another few weeks, it's going to stay that way. :(

Roll on Thanks Giving week! Other than some Christmas shopping, there should be a good amount of garage time then!

Merry Christmas everyone!

I’ve managed the sum total of zero work on my car for the past few months due to work travel and personal travel commitments. (Europe three times, South America once and many US states since my last post). I’ve not even had time to strip down a front bumper and send it to another member on Pelican.

However, Santa did deliver something nice for me when I recently got back from Dublin (day before Christmas) a nice new alloy engine lid! Thanks Santa! I knew all my hard work would pay off :D

Has anyone ever fitted one to their car? Is there any issue with galvanic corrosion? Is there some special prep or insulation method I should use if I ever dare risk a trip out to the garage? It’s -10F here at the moment,
I’m not sure the heater will keep up with the chill and the wind is howling!!!!

Thanks for any advice!

The shift knob is cool... did I miss what it was made of? Is that the final finish? BTW a drill press was on my list this year but no dice.

Alloy decklid? What alloy? Post pics...

Trackrash 12-27-2017 10:03 AM

Aluminum deck lid? Is it primered? Aluminum needs specific primers, your paint supplier will know what to use.

-10. Crimeney. I would think the rubber on your tires would freeze.

Thanks :D
The gearknob is stainless steel. It's still got a long way to go. Needs polishing.

That said, the new deck lid is freakishly light in some form of aluminum. I'll grab some pics. It almost makes me want to go down the route of 'just how light can I make this car?'. If that's the case, there may be some part redesigns on the cards!

I'm a bit worried about how to attach it and corrosion. I have been thinking about designing some alloy hinges and printing them...

Thanks for the special primer comment. I'm kind of tempted to leave part of it metal and clear coated.

I used RM EP569 Epoxy primer on mine. The TDS for the primer says it's good for aluminum, steel, fiberglass, etc. I would think most modern epoxy primers would stick adequately.

Figured you might find this interesting. 3 different deck lids, 3 different materials.

It will stay in place.

Making a guess...

Pic 3 - Steel?

I've just come back from Ireland, visiting my parents.

One of the great things about going over there is the large library of different European magazines you can pick up - many of the titles being Porsche related.

I picked up a current copy of 911 & Porsche World and fell in love with the cover car.
As I sat and read the article, I realized that the company, Classic Carreras, that built the car was around 30 miles from where I was sitting!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514591948.JPG
I dropped along with the hope of seeing a few nice cars in the parking lot and coming away again.

When I arrived there was very little outside to see, but popping my head through the door, I met one of the metal working guys who works there.

Unfortunately the green RSR inspired car is now off in England but... He was kind enough to give us (My son, uncle and I) a brief tour. What an amazing place and such talented guys!

I now wish I could afford to ship my car there and get them to rebuild it. Their jig based welding and rebuilding of cars is the only way to go, and their use of lead on the 356 so far beyond my skill set, it's obscene!

Those parts are cool Munky, hope you get the car on the road by summer.

Best,
Rutager

Yup! I'm going to post a few other weight comparisons on my build thread in a minute. Since I found the pics, may as well post them there. Steel vs. Al licence panels, bumperettes, and al vs. plastic taillights.

Munky King 12-30-2017 10:24 AM

I've just run through your thread and I'm in awe of your bodywork capabilities!

I'm going to have to farm mine out.

This is Johnny's thread to those who are interested in his weight saving:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/979976-project-heavy-metal-all-steel-classic-remastered-4.html

You chose the best color though. I'm struggling between signal orange and white. I think white may win the day. I don't want a car that shouts 'race me'. More one that can surprise a few people at how fast an old 'un can go when it hitches up its skirts. I'm staying narrow body too, so no other real indicators of any turn of speed.

I finally pulled the new alloy rear out of the packing (thanks again Santa) and took a few pics.

It's dropping to -34 here in Minnesota today and even though the garage is heated, the heater can't keep up, so little progress expected here. :(

Munky King 12-31-2017 06:56 AM

I decided to have a quick play and polish with one of my proto parts.
This is the gear knob. I sat and polished it while the in laws were around.
Really I should have got some more aggressive paper from the garage, but it’s too cold out there!
Anyway, this gives an idea of what it could look like, once I knock it back, past the printing layer lines:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514735694.jpg
Like I say, it really wanted a more aggressive first polish - but that will have to wait until it warms up a bit!

75 911s 12-31-2017 12:50 PM

That is actually really awesome! Love it!

Munky King 12-31-2017 03:20 PM

Thank you :D
It does still need a good sanding and then polishing again.
